Thoughts on Peace and War (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Thoughts on Peace and War Ihave a word or two more. For the doctrines, and for the opinions of this Address, I am alone responsible. For a moment, it was but for a moment, - it was thought that a word, or a sentence or two, might have been adapted to some temporary criticism of a portion of the public press. The criticism was the probable result of an imperfect memory, or of some unhappy tendency to find fault, and this without the current excuse. It has not been heeded. The Address was written, as above stated, at short notice and when it was finished, it was done. I have given a copy for the press, in the deep conviction of its truth. The Genesis of War and the Foundation of Peace (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Genesis of War and the Foundation of Peace In proceeding to disentangle and lay straight in our understanding the elements of any one of the complex problems that harass the life of the race, it is necessary to trace pres ent conditions from the1r pomt of origin. It may be said, strictly, that the finite mind is not capable of dealing with origins. But we can greatly aid our thinking by excluding inc1 dentals and thereby reducing the complexity of the problem to its simplest terms; we can return, in our thought, to that stage of de velopment Where human life included only the simple, fundamental relations and experi ences. Today it includes essentially no more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. More Thoughts on the War (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from More Thoughts on the War It matters not whether these shortcomings are less or greater one year than another. The desire of men's hearts does not wait upon results, and they do not love less the peace that is not because of the war that is. Rather they are more passionately aware of what that peace might be; and if in. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The War Against War

Book Description

Excerpt from The War Against War: And the Enforcement of Peace The author of the following essays, Professor Christen Christian Collin, holds an eminent position among Norwegian men of letters of to-day. Born in Trondhjem in 1857, he graduated in 1887 at the University of Christiania, to the professorial staff of which he at present belongs. Long and frequent visits to France, Germany, and England have familiarised him, not only with the literature, but with the whole life and thought of Western Europe; and a critical essay on Tolstoy shows that his studies have not been confined to the West. He was an intimate friend of Bjornstjerne Bjornson during the later years of that great poets life; and he has published the first instalment of a richly-documented biography of his friend. The State in Peace and War (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The State in Peace and War In the following pages an attempt has been made to follow the evolution of political ideas from the origin of the City-State to the rise of the modem Nation-State, and to give a concise statement of what seems to me to be the true principle of the latter. I have attempted to guard this principle from misconception, and specially to indicate the intimate relation of the State to the various subordinate organisations which it includes and which are essential to its perfection, as well as its relation to foreign states and to the world at large. To this has been added a short statement of the regulations of civilised warfare, a reference to the character of the British Empire, and a consideration of the proposals for a League of Nations. I have in the main avoided all reference to the present war, contenting myself with indicating the opposing conceptions of England and Germany. It may appear that I have gone a long way round, but perhaps this is a case in which "the longest way round is the shortest way home." Thoughts on the War (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Thoughts on the War In the Times on August 6th, the others in the Literary Supplement. I have to thank the proprietors of the Times for allowing me to reprint them. They are reprinted just as they were first published except for a few corrections. Some objec tion has been made by correspondents to the article called The Illusions of War, on the ground that it is dispiriting and mawkish. I wrote it as a sermon for myself and my own more violent feelings. Chris tianity tells us to love our enemies. I cannot pretend that I have succeeded in doing so but that article and passages in the other articles are attempts to attain to a state of mind in which the Christian command shall not seem a foolish impossibility; and they are not, I think, inconsistent with a belief that we are fighting for a good cause.
