In 1939 Cahn-Tober and her parents fled to Lvov; in 1941 she was left with the Polish family of Maria Niemiec in Przemysl, where she remained for two years, posing as a non-Jew. In 1943 Niemiec, fearing for the child's safety, took her to a Catholic orphanage in Warsaw; Cahn-Tober was occasionally able to see her parents, who lived as non-Jews on the "Aryan" side. Her father disappeared during the Warsaw uprising of 1944; she, her mother, and Niemiec were sent to the village of Mstow, where they remained until the liberation. After the war Cahn-Tober's father returned and the family eventually emigrated to the U.S. The Niemieces were recognized as Righteous among the Nations in 1988.
