A Fugue in Time

Book Description

Ghosts past, present, and future haunt an old London house in this masterful work of fiction from a New York Times–bestselling author. Sir Roland Ironmonger Dane is the last of his family to occupy the house at Number 99 Wiltshire Place in London. Now, in the early days of World War II, the elderly former general has been told that he must vacate the premises when the ninety-nine-year lease is up, leaving the only home he has ever known. But Sir Rolls and his longtime butler, Proutie, are not the only remaining residents. Yesterday, today, and tomorrow share the same space inside the old house, and every occupant from the past hundred years lives there still: Rolls’s ill-fated mother, Griselda; his father, the all-seeing “Eye”; his eight sisters and brothers. Even Rollo, the young boy Sir Rolls once was, continues to reside in Number 99, as does Lark, the adopted orphan whom he loved but let slip away. A century of a family’s history remains alive and vibrant within these walls, the events that defined their lives unfolding over and over again. But that living history is not ending quite yet, for the war is bringing a stranger from America to Number 99 Wiltshire Place to leave her indelible mark on it. A different kind of ghost story, Rumer Godden’s poignant, stylistically brilliant A Fugue in Time is a story rich in wonder, imagination, and heart—a favorite of the many devoted fans of the bestselling author of Black Narcissus and In This House of Brede. This ebook features an illustrated biography of the author including rare images from the Rumer Godden Literary Estate.

Time: 1. Timenami

Book Description

Martin sat in an old office chair. It didn't seem odd in the New Old West saloon. End o' the world and all, he thought. He knew them the moment they walked in. The man and woman were dressed right, but out of place. "Evenin'" Martin said casually. "We understand you buy new technology," the man said The lanky woman reached under her poncho and held a small black rectangular object out to him. Martin looked at it, said, "OK, I give up. What's it do?" The man dropped something, and there was a blinding explosion. "Flash-bang," Martin thought as he holstered his pistol. He scooped up the black rectangle, shoved it in his pocket and left. Back at his house Martin, looked at the device, set his drink down. He pulled out a cheroot, lit it, examined the device closely. His thumb ran along the flat surface and everything got loud suddenly. There was a blast and white light and the room disappeared. Martin felt rapid movement, said, "Another mission," and was gone.

Time: 2. Nemesis

Book Description

"Now, what are you guys doing here?" Martin asked. "Not that it isn't great to see you, but it usually means trouble and I already have that. Got a whole bunch of military types - Chloe probably told you - who want to get me killed soon as possible." "Didn't think I'd see you leading the troops," Trevor said. "And you won't, if I can help it," Martin said. The "military types" came in, handshakes around. "OK, so what's the deal?" Martin asked. "Not another bloody 'Timenami, ' I hope. Until you get a better name for it, count me out." "It's your old pal from just after The Fall, Gen. Shaw," Gen. Ted Dorne said. "Crazy ol' Ratface?" Martin asked. "Figures." "He's decided the end of world wasn't good enough," Dorne said. "He wants to finish us off." "Wants his own world, more like," Martin said. "Don't care," Chloe said, eying Martin. "We're not doing it." "Oh, come on," Martin said, smiling at his bride-to-be. "It'll be fun. We'll free a bunch of people and see the After-the-Fall sites."
