To Read and To Know

Book Description

In some language groups, Bible commentaries and translations are of lesser quality, often due to the lack of training in Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic for their authors and translators. Additionally, many commentaries are authored by those who are unfamiliar with the language, church, and culture of the target audience. Further, some language groups struggle with the quality of translations even of the biblical text itself. A translation may not be based on the biblical languages but on a Bible translation in another modern language. This can result in the theological perspective of the previous translators being unwittingly written into the subsequent translation. How can these challenges be addressed? In this volume of the Tyndale Theological Seminary Theses Series, two brothers, Bogdan and Alexandru Costea, address these types of biblical studies issues in Romania. Bogdan writes about the importance of having a Romanian commentary series that compares the biblical languages with the Romanian Bible versions used by Evangelicals and interacts with the Church Fathers. Alexandru evaluates the meaning and implications of σῴζω as translated in the Romanian Orthodox Bible, a word commonly translated as “save” in many English contexts. These two men thus grapple with the core issues related to commentary production suitable for the Romanian context as well as provide a model for other language contexts. Their interest, in conjunction with that of Dr. Octavian Baban and Dr. H. H. Drake Williams III, has helped to produce the Seria Comentarii Exegetice Româneşti (Oradea, RO: Decenu, 2023–).

Reforming Teaching and Teacher Education

Book Description

What are the prerequisites for reforming education, and how can these reforms be seen in school development and culture? How should teacher education support this reform process? What are the principles and practices underlying the functioning of the schools of tomorrow? These questions are examined in this unique volume. The authors in this book argue that the central function of teacher education and education in general is to respond to the challenges brought on by the twenty-first century. According to this approach, the competencies and skills needed in the future are not merely a new addition to school activities, but rather something requiring a comprehensive reform of school culture encompassing teacher education, curricula, and teaching methods. Such a fundamental process of change in the action and thinking models used by schools would be an effort to achieve a complete transformation, the result of which would be schools developing into organizations that are both creative and imbued with a strong sense of community. A central attribute is that the creation of new knowledge is not just restricted to the classroom but also takes place in out-of-school environments. This would link learning to its natural context, eventually leading to an ideal instruction that is actively problem oriented, holistic, and life centered. This reform-minded volume is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on the reform processes in teacher education, the second on the reforms of pedagogics at schools and teacher education institutions, and the third on the processes of reculturing schools. New prospects for active schools in the United States and Europe, as well as in Japan and China, are discussed.

Contextual Identities

Book Description

By bringing the concepts of “identity,” “comparativism,” and “communication” together, this volume invites a reinterpretation of these defining concepts of postmodernism. Composed of contributions from Australia, Azerbaijan, Japan, Romania and the Ukraine, this interdisciplinary and intercultural book investigates the multiple identities activated in broader discursive contexts. This collection of nineteen chapters opens with an introductory overview followed by two parts: the first, focusing on Plural identities and comparativism, contains a series of “case studies” that can be subsumed within imagology and comparativism; the second, Communication and discourse, illustrates two directions of research: literary communication and terminology. In spite of the methodological and thematic polyphony of its contributions, the volume adopts a unified and coherent tone. By integrating the study of contextual and discursive identities, this book will be of interest to all those involved in image and literary studies, in both linguistics and culture.

Teaching English to the World

Book Description

Teaching English to the World: History, Curriculum, and Practice is a unique collection of English language teaching (ELT) histories, curricula, and personal narratives from non-native speaker (NNS) English teachers around the world. No other book brings such a range of international ELT professionals together to describe and narrate what they know best. The book includes chapters from Brazil, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Lebanon, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Turkey. All chapters follow a consistent pattern, describing first the history of English language teaching in a particular country, then the current ELT curriculum, followed by the biography or the autobiography of an English teacher of that country. This consistency in the structuring of chapters will enable readers to assimilate the information easily while also comparing and contrasting the context of ELT in each country. The chapter authors--all born in or residents of the countries they represent and speakers of the local language or languages as well as English--provide insider perspectives on the challenges faced by local English language teachers. There is clear evidence that the majority of English teachers worldwide are nonnative speakers (NNS), and there is no doubt that many among them have been taught by indigenous teachers who themselves are nonnative speakers. This book brings the professional knowledge and experience of these teachers and the countries they represent to a mainstream Western audience including faculty, professionals, and graduate students in the field of ESL; to the international TESOL community; and to ELT teachers around the world.

Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to the English Language

Book Description

Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to the English Language: Theory and Practice provides an overview of a less tackled field of research, namely the main issues at stake when teaching English Language and Culture in Romania. The approach is an interdisciplinary and cross-cultural one, as the authors investigate problems, offering and probing solutions from a cross-curricular perspective. The book is a collection of 10 contributions by teachers and researchers from Romania which draw on theoretical and applied methodological explorations into the challenges posed by teaching/learning English in a globalised context. Organised into three main chapters, the volume addresses the multifacetedness of language education as a cross-discipline. The complexity and universality of the research enquiries and practical insights make the topics addressed valid across the contemporary globalising educational context. Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to the English Language: Theory and Practice will be a useful tool to specialists and practitioners from ESP and CLIL domains alike, as well as graduate and postgraduate students in foreign language teaching.
