This book is written to highlight an completely different aspect of the actual problem of Jammu and Kashmir state and how it manifested to the current situation. The ‘Great Game’ of the British Empire of having a buffer state between India and the expanding Soviets is known to all. However, the shrewd policies of achieving the dominance of a particular ethnicity over the complete state of Jammu and Kashmir state has been cleverly hidden from the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The Tribal invasion of 1947, the conditions for accession to India and the demarcation of Cease Fire Line achieved a particular set of Geographical and Ethnic divide that completely changed the politics and demographic pattern of Jammu and Kashmir. This book further makes an endeavor to understand the actual impact of demarcation of Cease Fire line and where the state of Jammu and Kashmir was cleverly steered over the last 75 years. Also, this book aims to bring out the true leaders of Jammu and Kashmir, who mattered the most in 1947 including Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, Choudhary Ghulam Abbas and Mirwaiz Yusuf Shah, Pandit Prem nath Dogra, Mahashey Ram Chand and Ahmed Yar Khan ‘Duggar’.

Education is the key to developmental process and also influences demographic behaviour. Jammu and Kashmir is homeland to a number of tribal communities with diverse eco-cultural, socioeconomic and geographical backgrounds. These Scheduled Tribes experience passive indifference that takes the form of exclusion from educational opportunities and social participation. Education has been considered as a lever to raise one's position in the society as well as a tool to fight against poverty and ignorance. The present paper explored the current status of education among scheduled tribes in Jammu and Kashmir. Despite constitutional protection and assurances, even after two and a half decades, their educational status is far lower than the total literacy of the State and also lower than literacy rate of scheduled tribes at national level. There is an essential need to make serious efforts by government, non-government organizations and other local bodies to augment the pace of development in tribal education of Jammu and Kashmir.

Efforts to develop warmer relations between South Asia¿s two nuclear powers, India and Pakistan, will not succeed unless political violence in Kashmir is reduced. One of the key factors sustaining that violence is the dearth of economic opportunities, which ensures a steady supply of disaffected recruits to terrorists and militant groups. This report sketches the turbulent history of Kashmir from its division in 1947 through the revolt of 1989-90 to 2003, and then explores the economic dimensions of the conflict and the opportunities for peacebuilding. The governments of India and Pakistan, together with political leaders in Kashmir, must take the lead in promoting economic dev¿t., but they require the assistance of internat. financial institutions and of the U.S.

This book provides detailed information on the various ethnic fermented foods and beverages of India. India is home to a diverse food culture comprising fermented and non-fermented ethnic foods and alcoholic beverages. More than 350 different types of familiar, less-familiar and rare ethnic fermented foods and alcoholic beverages are traditionally prepared by the country’s diverse ethnic groups, and include alcoholic, milk, vegetable, bamboo, legume, meat, fish, and cereal based beverages. Most of the Indian ethnic fermented foods are naturally fermented, whereas the majority of the alcoholic beverages have been prepared using dry starter culture and the ‘back-sloping’ method for the past 6,000 years. A broad range of culturable and unculturable microbiomes and mycobiomes are associated with the fermentation and production of ethnic foods and alcoholic drinks in India. The book begins with detailed chapters on various aspects including food habits, dietary culture, and the history, microbiology and health benefits of fermented Indian food and beverages. Subsequent chapters describe unique and region-specific ethnic fermented foods and beverages from all 28 states and 9 union territories. In turn the classification of various ethnic fermented foods and beverages, their traditional methods of preparation, culinary practices and mode of consumption, socio-economy, ethnic values, microbiology, food safety, nutritional value, and process optimization in some foods are discussed in details with original pictures. In closing, the book addresses the medicinal properties of the fermented food products and their health benefits, together with corresponding safety regulations.
