Two Wars transports readers towards a full experience about the evils of war. Sometimes a war can be a negative good, Joseph Hardy finds out that the Iraq war is a negative ill. The novel explains how two young men, Martinez and Joseph Hardy enlist in the USMC. Martinez joins because of educational opportunities and a sense of strong nationalism. Hardy joins because he has few options and he is a patriot who wants to defend his country against terrorism. Both young men meet in Parris Island where they become Boot Camp buddies. Martinez fights because he was lied to and he was given promises of being an officer and to obtain college education. He finds none. Hardy fights a war in Iraq. He does care if he sacrifices his blood for his country. Back home, he leaves a child with his High School sweetheart. And now he longs for his family in the other side of the world. The emergence of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards in 1989 sparked a sea change in thinking about the nature and quality of mathematics instruction in U.S. schools. Much is known about transmission forms of mathematics teaching and the influence of this teaching on students' learning, but there is still little knowledge about the alternative forms of instruction that have evolved from the recent widespread efforts to reform mathematics education. Beyond Classical Pedagogy: Teaching Elementary School Mathematics reports on the current state of knowledge about these new instructional practices, which differ in significant ways from the traditional pedagogy that has permeated mathematics education in the past. This book provides a research-based view of the nature of facilitative teaching in its relatively mature form, along with opposing views and critique of this form of pedagogy. The focus is on elementary school mathematics classrooms, where the majority of the reform-based efforts have occurred, and on the micro level of teaching (classroom interaction) as a source for revealing the complexity involved in teaching, teachers' learning, and the impact of both on children's learning. The work in elementary mathematics teaching is situated in the larger context of research on teaching. Research and insights from three disciplinary perspectives are presented: the psychological perspective centers on facilitative teaching as a process of teachers' learning; the mathematical perspective focuses on the nature of the mathematical knowledge teachers need in order to engage in this form of teaching; the sociological perspective attends to the interactive process of meaning construction as teachers and students create intellectual communities in their classrooms. The multidisciplinary perspectives presented provide the editors with the necessary triangulation to provide confirming evidence and rich detail about the nature of facilitative teaching. Audiences for this book include scholars in mathematics education and teacher education, teacher educators, staff developers, and classroom teachers. It is also appropriate as a text for graduate courses in mathematics education, teacher education, elementary mathematics teaching methods, and methods of research in mathematics education.

As a member of a prominent Salt Lake City family and a direct descendant of Mormon pioneer Brigham Young, Brooke Williams was born into a carefully scripted life. He would study hard, be involved with his church and community, and follow in the footsteps of three previous generations to work in the family business. And that is what he did -- at least at first. Yet despite his outward signs of success, Williams was not satisfied. His deep love of the outdoors and insatiable desire to experience wild nature made living the life expected of him an ongoing struggle. He escaped at every opportunity into wildness, deliberately seeking risky ski routes, long, lonely runs, and other outdoor adventures, from the deserts of Mexico to the waters off Alaska. Realizing he was drowning emotionally and unable to bring his "halflives" together, he grew increasingly frustrated as the gap between his two worlds expanded. Halflives is the story of Brooke Williams' personal quest to balance the expectations of family and society with the needs and desires of his heart. He identifies a balance we all must strike between our cultural obligations and the strong pull toward wildness that our evolutionary heritage exerts on the human psyche. Book jacket.
