Types of Australian weather

Book Description

The author, from his observations as a meteorologist, shares with readers his report regarding types of Australian weather. Many of these appear to be peculiar to Australia, and at the same time connected with Equatorial and other weather. That they throw much new light upon the source of the greater part of Australian rain, and show how these rain storms develop out of ordinary weather conditions is certain; at the same time, they form an important contribution to the study of weather in the Southern Hemisphere generally.

Three Essays on Australian Weather (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Three Essays on Australian Weather The following essays on "Australian Weather" have been brought together and published in book form by the Hon. Ralph Abercromby, for convenient reference by students of Meteorology, because he thinks that they are important contributions to our knowledge of the Meteorology of a new field. In passing it may be mentioned that the preparation of them has been made possible by the very complete Meteorological records of the Sydney Observatory, especially the continuous automatic records of wind, rain, barometer, and weather charts introduced by the present Director. These afford the means of reference to wind and weather at any moment since 1863, and the barograph since 1870, without which it would have been impossible to study in the necessary detail the so-called "Southerly Burster," which is perhaps the most remarkable of the "squall" winds which are found in various parts of the earth. The first essay, "Moving Anticyclones," is here reproduced with the consent of the author. It establishes the progressive easterly motion of weather over Australia. The Climate of Western Australia, From Meteorological Observations Made During the Years 1876-1899 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Climate of Western Australia, From Meteorological Observations Made During the Years 1876-1899 These remarks have been considered necessary in order that readers may appraise the following tables at their proper value. In a somewhat crude 'inspection of the original returns any obviously incorrect observations have been struck out and all the additions, etc., have been checked, so that it may be safely assumed that the results in this volume give a close approximation to the truth; sufficiently so for all practical purposes, but scarcely to be considered quite accurate enough for the scientist. It was originally intended to publish results up to the end of 1896 only, but since that time several new stations have been Opened in just those regions which are of the greatest popular interest, so the whole has been brought forward to the end of 1899. Australian Meteorology

Book Description

Excerpt from Australian Meteorology: A Text-Book Including Sections on Aviation and Climatology This text-book has developed partly from the series of lectures which I have given since August, 1914, to the aviators at the Commonwealth Flying School, and partly from a more extended course at the University of Melbourne. Similar. Books written for British or American readers, quite apart from their lack of local application, are somewhat confusing to Australian students, for the fundamental rules dealing 'with wind circulation have all to be reversed in the southern hemi sphere. Moreover, our latitudes are much lower than those of either of the two countries cited, so that many of our problems belong to tropical meteorology.
