This paper discusses the linkages between population growth and environmental problems in Nigeria. Issues related to urban poverty, urbanization, deforestation, desertification, water pollution, solid waste management, flooding, erosion, sanitation and health were also highlighted. The study relies mainly on secondary data relating to urban poverty and environmental problems in Nigeria. Data were collected from both published and unpublished sources. Non-statistical and statistical methods were applied in analysing poverty and environmental problems in Nigeria. The paper also analyzes weaknesses affecting environmental management, such as inconsistencies of government policies, neglect of indigenous knowledge, inappropriate technology, inadequate funding, and inadequate awareness. The paper concluded by recommending a way forward.
