Evaluation of the Effects of Agricultural Activity on Water Quality in Webster County, Iowa

Book Description

These elevated concentrations were only observed in samples collected between December and March. Concentrations of nitrate-N decreased in the monitoring wells during the study, indicating that the egg plant may have been a point source of nitrate-N but was removed as a source by changes in manure handling practices. Farm well water ranged from 0 to 6.3 mg/l nitrate-N. The highest levels occurred in two farm flowing wells located in a confined aquifer. Wells with poor construction also showed elevated concentrations. Maximum concentrations occurred in fall in the two flowing wells. None of the wells reached concentrations approaching the EPA's limit of 10 mg/l, and wells <100 ft. deep contained the highest concentrations. There was no correlation between dissolved oxygen and nitrate-n in the wells.
