"Throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s, in the wake of the installation of Brazil's military dictatorship, artists and art collectives in Brazil used their work to critique the government and its sanitized images of Brazil, its use of torture, and its targeted persecutions. Mari Rodríguez Binnie's The São Paulo Neo-Avant Garde studies this art and its engagement with politics and mainstream institutions and traditions. During this period São Paulo was home to a growing number of high-rise office buildings, and many of the artists studied here held day jobs that gave them after-hours access to new technologies of mass production that became foundational to their work. As the author writes, "By appropriating processes such as photocopy, offset lithography, and thermal and heliographic printing, these artists simultaneously challenged the hidebound institutions of São Paulo's art world, as well as the regime's own manipulation of mass media through censorship and propaganda. The artists did so through works that, in their radical content and form, hinged on establishing alternative networks of communication both at the local and international levels." A significant contribution on the development and aftermath of post–World War II Concretism in Brazil Form and Feeling features a collection of essays by noted scholars exploring the sensorial, experience-based, and participatory practices pioneered in the 1950s by artists and poets such as Flávio de Carvalho, Ivan Serpa, Hélio Oiticica, Haroldo de Campos, Mary Vieira, Lygia Pape, Anna Maria Maiolino, Lygia Clark, Waly Salomão, and Emil Forman, among many others. Fourteen thought-provoking essays examine how many of their strategies constituted a pertinent critique of the country’s wide-ranging embrace of Eurocentric modernity while anticipating a number of practices prevalent among contemporary artists today—namely, the rise of art as social practice, the embrace of pedagogical concerns by artists, and relational aesthetics. The fourteen essays collected in this volume consider the ramifications of modernist abstraction in the second half of the twentieth century and contribute to a growing academic field in postwar Brazilian and Latin American art history. Contributions to this anthology examine the development of modernist ideas that flourished in Brazil during a controversial period interspersed by dictatorial regimes. The global aspect of Brazilian art is especially evident in these studies, presenting the relational complexity of their subjects as transcultural, transnational actors while simultaneously contributing to a growing, increasingly nuanced understanding of visual and material culture, performance, and criticism in Brazil. The Tropics

The idea of the Tropics has always been a cultural construct - and not just beyond the Tropics themselves. This catalogue takes European projections of the Tropics as its point of departure, and at the same time, aims to reflect on this construct. Two hundred exhibits from Africa, Asia, Oceania and tropical America from the collections of the Museum of Ethnology in Berlin enter into a dialogue with works by forty contemporary artists from Brazil, South America, Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. This project is the first time that such a bridge has been built between works created in pre-modern times and contemporary works. The pre-modern art shows us the Tropics before they lost their innocence and became the so-called Third World; the strength of the contemporary art, for its part, is its high level of reflection and critical potential. Old and new art come together in this space: one goal is to examine the cultural weight of the natural landscape of the Tropics against the background of an unavoidable political and economic discourse.
