Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative

Book Description

The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

Above and Beyond

Book Description

"Above and Beyond is a wonderful creation which describes more than its title. It is a must read for those who are looking further than just leading a business successfully, towards building enduring institutions. The authors through live examples drawn from their vast experience having worked together in building an institution, and later helping many others to do so, have shown that this is possible with care and concern for people while encouraging and supporting them to take on challenges without any fear. Truly insightful and inspirational." M M MurugappanExecutive Chairman, Murugappa group***Above and Beyond: How to Build Impactful Businesses, Where Everybody Wins! begins at a point where most management books end-profits, shareholder wealth and success. According to the authors, truly great organisations do not stop there; they leap to the space beyond excellence. Binocular Rivalry

Book Description

Recent work on perceptual ambiguity and its implications for the correlation between neural events and perceptual experience. Researchers today in neuroscience and cognitive psychology increasingly turn their attention to binocular rivalry and other forms of perceptual ambiguity or bistability. The study of fluctuations in visual perception in the face of unchanging visual input offers a means for understanding the link between neural events and visual events, including visual awareness. Some neuroscientists believe that binocular rivalry reveals a fundamental aspect of human cognition and provides a way to isolate and study brain areas involved in attention and selection. The eighteen essays collected in Binocular Rivalry present the most recent theoretical and empirical work on this key topic by leading researchers in the field. After the opening chapter's overview of the major characteristics of binocular rivalry in their historical contexts, the contributors consider topics ranging from the basic phenomenon of perceptual ambiguity to brain models and neural networks. The essays illustrate the potential power of the study of perceptual ambiguity as a tool for learning about the neural concomitants of visual awareness, or, as they have been called, the "neural correlates of consciousness."

Visual Pattern Analyzers

Book Description

The visual system must extract from the light that falls on the retina meaningful information about what is where in our environment. At an early stage it analyzes the incoming sensory data along many dimensions of pattern vision, e.g. spatial frequency, orientation, velocity, eye-of-origin. Visual Pattern Analyzers provides a definitive account of current knowledge about this stage of visual processing. Nowhere else can such a comprehensive summarty of the lower level pattern analyzers be found. The book's emphasis is on psychophysical experiments measuring the detection and identification of near-threshold patterns -- and the mathematical models, such as multidimensional signal-detection theory, used to draw inferences from such experimental results -- but neurophysiological evidence is presented and compared critically to the psychophysical evidence. Introductory material on psychophysical methods, signal detection theory, and the mathematics of Fourier analysis is given in order to make the book more accessible to all who are interested in the lower or higher levels of visual perception. This volume will be of great value to researchers and graduate students in the fields of vision and perception. Within the scientific community there is wide interest in the visual system, and the book will be of use to investigators in many fields, including psychophysics, neuroscience, ophthalmology and optics, computer science, and cognitive and experimental psychology.

Reviewing Research in Special Education

Book Description

This innovative collection combines research reviews in special education and an exploration of the findings from these reviews from practitioner and policy maker perspectives. It consists of five sets of papers, the first of which in each set presents a summary of a conventional research review, and the second – commonly produced in collaboration with teachers – translates the review findings into classroom and policy making implications. The first four sets of papers derive from work commissioned by the National Council for Special Education in Ireland. They deal with best practice and outcomes in the education of pupils who are deaf, visually impaired, on the autistic spectrum, or have emotional and behavioural difficulties. The fifth set is based on a review of explicit memory studies in populations with intellectual disabilities that was submitted to the European Journal of Special Needs Education. This direct pairing of technical and practitioner-oriented perspectives is relatively unusual, and the collection will be a useful addition to the literature for academics, practitioners and policy makers. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Special Needs Education.
