Visual Aids in the Productions of the First Piscator-Bühne, 1927-28

Book Description

This analysis of four major productions by Erwin Piscator, Hoppla, Rasputin, Schweik and Konjunktur (1927/28), examines the nature of his pioneering visual effects. The films, projections, cartoons, elaborate sets and machinery - here designated 'visual aids' - are shown to have a didactic function. They 'frame' the action politically, thus evolving a sophisticated new theatrical method. Comparison with Brecht's work establishes differences of emphasis in the approach to a common goal. Piscator's montage of disparate elements is seen as a vital contribution to epic theatre.

Memory in Play

Book Description

This innovative study examines the role of memory in the history of theatre and drama. Favorini analyzes issues of memory in self-construction, collective memory, the clash of memory and history and even explores what the work of cognitive scientists can teach us about brain function and our response to drama.

Documentary Vanguards in Modern Theatre

Book Description

Practitioners and critics alike often attribute great authenticity to documentary theatre, casting it as a salutary alternative not only to corporate news outlets and official histories but also to the supposed "self-indulgence" and "elitism" of avant-garde theatre. Documentary Vanguards in Modern Theatre, by contrast, argues for treating documentarians as vanguardists who (for good or ill) push, remap, or transgress the margins of historical and political visibility, often taking issue with professional discourses that claim a monopoly on authoritative representations of the real. This is the first book to situate documentary theatre’s development within the larger story of theatrical experimentalism, collage art, collective ritual, and other avant-garde dramaturgical and performance practices of the late 19th and 20th Centuries.

Voicings

Book Description

Not merely "history" plays, documentary dramas rely on actual rather than imaginary events and incorporate other media such as photographs, film clips, and songs. The plays in Voicings use all these tools and address issues that even today remain raw and emotional. Included are works previously not available in English (Piscator's In Spite of Everything!) and never in print (Compensation, a Soviet documentary on the Chernobyl disaster). Landmark drama such as Peter Weiss's The Investigation is also part of this collection. Included as well are the more recent Execution of Justice by Emily Mann and Mame Hunt's Unquestioned Integrity, a drama on the controversial testimony of Anita Hill at the hearings confirming Clarence Thomas's nomination to the Supreme Court.
