The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the smallest member of the European Union, is a sovereign state tucked away between Belgium, France and Germany. Formerly a formidable fortress it has over the centuries been successively assailed and occupied by Burgundian, Spanish, French, Austrian and Prussian troops. Luxembourg has become one of the thriving financial and telecommunications centres of Western Europe, thanks both to its geographical position and its highly qualified, multilingual work-force.

The Middle Ages provide important points of reference during the nation-building process in Luxembourg. This book deconstructs the traditional narrative of that period, with its function as a time of national origins and national heroes.

This book provides a comprehensive account of mosaics in the ancient world from the early pebble mosaics of Greece to the pavements of Christian churches in the East. Separate chapters in Part I cover the principal regions of the Roman Empire in turn, in order to bring out the distinctive characteristics of their mosaic workshops. Questions of technique and production, of the role of mosaics in architecture, and of their social functions and implications are treated in Part II. The book discusses both well-known works and recent finds, and balances consideration of exceptional masterpieces against standard workshop production. Two main lines of approach are followed throughout: first, the role of mosaics as a significant art form, which over an unbroken span illuminates the evolution of pictorial style better than any comparable surviving medium; and secondly, their character as works of artisan production closely linked to their architectural context.

Hermann & Valentiny first came to public attention in the 1980s with their villa in the Rauchstrasse, a part of the International Building Exhibition in Berlin, when postmodernism was at its peak in Europe. Since then the office which is based in Vienna and Remerschen has built in Austria, Luxembourg and Germany, and its architecture has progressed in both form and content. Representing Luxembourg at the architecture biennale in Venice, Hermann & Valentiny reveal how architecture and art can be successfully combined. This up-to-date report "Now" illustrates how conceptual questions and a comparatively restricted choice of materials dominate the work of Hermann & Valentiny. Wherever possible they use concrete to replace plaster; glass maintains its unique role; metal mesh acts as a membrane, allowing historical architecture to shimmer through. Moreover, colour has a special function in their architecture. Not just black and white, but also tomato red, melon yellow, peppermint green... Finally, the book reveals the architects' general concepts which incorporate the living, the natural surroundings in the plans.

An essential reference guide to this important, but relatively unknown European country and offers an overview of its geography, people, language, religion, government, education, and history. Chronology and comprehensive bibliography. This sturdily constructed title is most welcome for its ability to provide quick answers to questions. It is recommended for the reference collections of academic and large public libraries. --ARBA
