Welcome to Wally World

Book Description

Welcome to Wally World is a journal of one man's two years in retail management at Wal-mart Stores Inc. The journal "chronicles" his personal experiences working with the mega-retailer and exposes the good, bad, and sometimes the ugly side of the retail business giant, in a humorous and whimsical way. There is no book like this that gives you a detailed look into to the day-to-day operations at such a grassroots level. If you loved the outrageous and situational comedy of Laura Weisberger's The Devil Wears Prada with the heart felt realism of Barbara Ehrenreich's Nickel and Dimed, you'll love Welcome to Wally World. Written in a journal format, each day tells a different story with familiar themes. While each day ends, another adventure always seems to be just around the corner. Each story stands on its own as a mixture of humor, anecdotes, and some seriousness. Readers will laugh at the hilarious and sometimes insane behind the scenes antics. If shoppers only knew the story behind the scenes . and now they do. Welcome to Wally World represents a real "grassroots" effort to capture experiences, emotions, and goings on inside the world's largest retailer. A number of books may have been written from the corporate perspective, but this work focuses on the people behind the power-those hardworking clerks and managers who actually move the products and stock the shelves to achieve those sales and gross profits. Having spent nearly two years involved with the detailed experiences depicted in the book, I feel uniquely qualified to bring these stories and anecdotes to the public eye. Mixed with humor, seriousness and irony, Welcome to Wally World is a personal journey of my professional life with the company. The "take away" from my experiences with Wal-mart led me to the writing style you'll find in the book. No personal names are used. What is important is that these events portrayed would happen regardless of the individuals involved. The implication is that people are simply "cogs" in the corporate machine. Each day, via diary format, illustrates my belief that the journey was like a series of crazy, wild, and unpredictable "movies" or sub-journeys all rolled into one brief career. Each day at work, stood on its own.

Embedding Perl in HTML with Mason

Book Description

Mason doesn't aim to be the one true Perl-based templating system for building web sites, but it's led many programmers to abandon their custom solutions when they've seen how much easier using Mason can be. It's a powerful, open source, Perl-based web site development and delivery engine, with features that make it an ideal backend for high load sites serving dynamic content. Mason uses a concept called components: a mix of HTML, Perl, and special Mason commands. These components can be entire web pages, or bits of HTML that can be embedded in top-level components. Shared and reusable, these components greatly simplify site maintenance: when you change a shared component, you instantly change all pages that refer to it.Although using Mason isn't difficult, creating a Mason-based site can be tricky. Embedding Perl in HTML with Mason, written by members of Mason's core development team, shows you how to take advantage of Mason's strengths while avoiding the obstacles that inexperienced users may encounter. Mason's unique features, when used properly, can streamline the design of a web site or application. This concise book covers these features from several angles, and includes a study of the authors' sample site where these features are used.Embedding Perl in HTML with Mason shows you how to create large, complex, dynamically driven web sites that look good and are a snap to maintain. You'll learn how to visualize multiple Mason-based solutions to any given problem and select among them. The book covers the latest line of Mason development 1.1x, which has many new features, including line number reporting based on source files, sub-requests, and easier use as a CGI. The only book to cover this important tool, Embedding Perl in HTML with Mason is essential reading for any Perl programmer who wants to simplify web site design. Learn how to use Mason, and you'll spend more time making things work, and less time reinventing the wheel.

Songs in a Box

Book Description

This time, the enemy is human. On a trip to spread his Grampy’s ashes in the Amazon, John "Lockjaw" Smith finds love, and a renewed sense of purpose, in the person of Willa Vernon, a lady haunted by her past association with a group of eugenic maniacs. On the return trip, they add a passenger. She is a delightfully unique “ninety-year-old hyperactive child” with eyes like a jaguar, muscles like a howler monkey, and the mind of the Savant. She names herself Dorothy, after the fictional balloon traveler to a place called Oz. Dorothy knows the world only from stories, yet she is the only person alive with the ability to save the world from Willa’s old employers. She has thirty days to solve a puzzle. The maniacs have a head start of more than a century. It’s not fair. Poor maniacs. Oh, well. A little mass murder could even the playing field again.

Lead with Hospitality

Book Description

Across all industries and levels of organizations, one key leadership trait inspires and motivates more than any other: hospitality. We have all encountered inspirational leaders who've helped us, taught us, encouraged us, pushed us to get outside our comfort zones, or motivated us to become the best version of ourselves. What is it about their leadership styles that inspires us to do more for our team and our personal and professional growth? Turns out, we admire these leaders for the same reasons we love our favorite hotels, resorts, restaurants, or bars: How they make us feel is essential. Members of today's workforce—especially millennials and Gen Z—are looking for inspiring environments and work that truly fulfills them. Before anyone is compelled to do anything they first must feel. Speaker, consultant, and hospitality industry veteran Taylor Scott knows that the most effective leaders approach their roles with heart, emotionally connecting with their team members before attempting to manage them. Scott draws from his two decades in leadership roles at respected hotels, resorts, and restaurants. He distills the principles of gracious hospitality, translating them into actionable leadership lessons which apply in any industry, such as: • How making people feel welcome fosters loyalty and keeps workers engaged with an organization's purpose • How serving people with empathy and compassion sparks workers' highest productivity • How making people feel comfortable encourages exploration, curiosity, and discovery while inviting everyone to lean into their creativity • How making people feel significant drives them to deliver their best work He also shares specific, practical steps you can take to put these principles into action. Scott shows how to connect, serve, engage, coach, and inspire your peers, teams, and even your own leaders. Lead with Hospitality is a call to action to connect with people on a human level which ultimately inspires teams, organizations, and companies to go to the next level.
