This SAE Recommended Practice provides minimum performance requirements and uniform laboratory procedures for fatigue testing of wheels and demountable rims intended for normal highway use on trucks, buses, truck-trailers, and multipurpose vehicles. Users may establish design criteria exceeding the minimum performance requirement for added confidence in a design. The cycle requirements noted in Tables 1 and 2 are based on Weibull statistics using 2 parameter, median ranks, 50% confidence level and 90% reliability, and beta equal to 2, typically noted as B10C50. For other wheels intended for normal highway use and temporary use on passenger cars, light trucks, and multipurpose vehicles, see SAE J328. For wheels used on trailers drawn by passenger cars, light trucks, or multipurpose vehicles, see SAE J1204. For bolt together military wheels, see SAE J1992. This document does not cover other special application wheels and rims. SAE J267 practitioners have typically performed multiple cornering and radial fatigue tests when assessing a wheel design's conformance with this recommended practice. Running multiple tests enhances the confidence and reliability of the results. In this revision, this common practice has been formalized by introducing a set of sample sizes and corresponding cycle requirements based on Weibull statistics.Previous publications of SAE J267 contained terminology to "provide minimum performance requirements". This terminology was not consistently interpreted by practitioners. To clarify the meaning, a definition of the term "minimum performance requirement" has been added.An additional cause for termination was added for aluminum wheels.

Wheels--Recreational and Utility Trailer Test Procedure

This SAE Recommended Practice provides uniform procedures and minimum performance requirements for fatigue testing ferrous and aluminum wheels intended for normal highway use on travel, camping, and boat and light utility trailers drawn by passenger cars, light trucks, and multipurpose vehicles. (See Figures 1 and 2.) For procedures and minimum performance requirements for wheels used on trucks, see SAE J267, and for wheels used on passenger cars, see SAE J328. For the application of passenger car and light ruck wheels [inset less than 0.10 m (0.33 ft)] to this trailer service, use this procedure. For the application of heavier truck wheels [inset 0.10 m (0.33 ft) or mre] use SAE J267. Mobile home service is outside the scope of this document. There are two basic test procedures described, a cornering fatigue test and radial fatigue test. The cornering test is directed at the wheel disc; whereas the radial test also examines the rim and attachment portion of the wheel. Both test procedures are required to obtain a thorough examination of the wheel.

During the 5 year review we found that dimensions for the wheel test adapter (wheel backup diameter) were missing from the document. SAE J694 was added to the document list. A note was also added to the procedure sections to go to SAE J694 for test adapter dimensions (wheel backup diameter). Appendix B was updated to include current production tires and their slr (static loaded radii).

All the changes are editorial and/or for clarification purposes.
