Bark and Wood Boring Insects in Living Trees in Europe, a Synthesis


Book Description

For the first time, a synthesis on the research work done in Europe on all Bark And Wood Boring Insects In Living Trees (BAWBILT) is presented. As final product of a four-year research project gathering together 100 scientists from 24 countries, the book is the fruit of a real collective synthesis in which all European specialists have participated. It reviews and comments on all the European literature, while considering the biological (trees, insects, associated organisms, and their relationships) and forest management aspects. However, although focused on the European forest, it also compares the available information and interpretations to those concerning similar species in other continents. It ends with propositions of research priorities for Europe. The book is directed to all scientists and students concerned with forest entomology and ecology, as well as to forest managers and all scientific public interested in forest biology.




Revision of Neosuarius, a Subgenus of Chrysopodes (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae)


Book Description

This study of the subgenus Neosuarius initiates a much-needed revision of the neotropical genus Chrysopodes. The study begins by re-defining the suite of traits that characterizes the subgenus; in doing so, it limits the taxon to a cohesive set of species. Then, because most previous descriptions were brief and did not refer to the genitalia, it re-describes and illustrates the adults of all species assigned to the newly re-defined subgenus. A key with illustrations is provided to facilitate identification of Neosuarius species. For each species, the publication includes a diagnosis, complete synonymy, list of literature citations, and information on the distribution and known biology. To stabilize the subgenus and reduce nomenclatural problems in the future, special emphasis is placed on the type specimens of all species in the subgenus and their synonyms. Taxonomic changes include: (1) One previously synonymized species is recognized as a valid biological entity. (2) Five species are removed from the subgenus. (3) Six species are synonymized with previously described C. (Neosuarius) species. (4) Lectotypes or holotypes are identified for all species and synonyms.




Dust Mites


Book Description

Conservatively, at least 100 million people are affected by house dust mite allergy worldwide, manifesting itself as asthma, rhinitis or atopic dermatitis. Despite the growing recognition of this major public health problem, and commitment of considerable research resources, there is still no simple, effective, generally-applicable strategy for dust mite control. The reasons for this are complex, but a contributing factor remains some important knowledge gaps and misconceptions regarding aspects of biology and ecology of dust mites. The purpose of this book is to provide a comprehensive reference work for all readers with an involvement or interest in house dust mite research and management, incorporating for the first time in a single volume the topics of systematics and identification, physiology, ecology, allergen biochemistry and molecular biology, epidemiology, mite control and allergen avoidance. It is hoped the book will help spread the message that studies of the biology and ecology of house dust mites should be regarded within the context of allergic disease rather than as ends in themselves, and that approaches to mite control in clinical management are subject to the same series of ecological rules as any other major problem in pest management.
