The clamour of nationalism

Book Description

Nationalism has reasserted itself today as the political force of our times, remaking European politics wherever one looks. Britain is no exception, and in the midst of Brexit, it has even become a vanguard of nationalism’s confident return to the mainstream. Intellectual attempts to account for nationalism’s resurgence have however floundered. Desperately trying to read nationalism through one overarching cause – as capitalist crisis, as cultural backlash, or as social media led anti-Establishment politics – these accounts have proven woefully inadequate. This book argues that the only way to understand nationalism is through nationalism itself. To understand it as the key force of modernity that calls upon all existing ideological traditions in asserting its appeal: whether it is liberal, conservative, neoliberal or left-wing. This ideological clamour that characterises today’s British nationalism requires both recognition and theorisation. A meaningful understanding of new nationalism must reckon with the ideological range animating it and the deeply hostile aversion to different racial minorities that pervades its respective ideologies. Drawing on a variety of cultural and political themes – ranging from Corbyn’s dithering, the cult of Churchillism, the neoliberal fixation with a ‘point-system’ immigration policy, the muscular secularism of Richard Dawkins and friends, fears that the white working class have ‘become black’, and even simply the strange appeal of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones – this book provides a dazzling but always detailed study of how nationalism is the politics of today only because it is a politics of everything.

Shoes and Skies

Book Description

Presenting a brand new collection of more than 200 poems that generously engage with various poetic devices. A must-have collection for readers who want to flirt with the classical 'old world' charm of poetry that is also firmly anchored in fresh breaths of contemporary themes. The author paints vivid, ambient, and emotional landscapes with words, stitching fantastical narratives that catch you off guard. A poem on pressure cookers? Eggs, paperweights, pistachios, bears speaking French, a rat dating a nightingale, chickens entering the disco? These and several such surreal metaphors creatively explore grander concerns that also embody acute observations of human life and deeper layers of our collective psyche. Dollops of wit, romance, humor, hope, and satire have been lavishly scattered throughout the book, highlighting different shades of many elucidated topics. To summarize, this book is enamored with rich, intricately layered imagery and ideas in writing that probe a multitude of dimensions while maintaining affinity to the literary quality of its works.

Pencak Silat in the Indonesian Archipelago

Book Description

The effort O'ong Maryono has made to compile a book on the development of pencak silat, is, in itself, commendable. This integrated presentation provides for a better and more comprehensive understanding of the various aspects of pencak silat. As well as discussing the historical aspects of pencak silat, O'ong Maryono also examines current issues in pencak silat. In other words, a retrospective and prospective view of pencak silat. I hope that this book will be widely read, and provide a 'lively' and substantial critical analysis that will improve the quality of discourse on pencak silat as a whole. Edy Sedyawati Director General of Culture Department of Education and Culture This book is quite unique. Unique in the literal sense: there is no other like it. It is quite a remarkable fact that although frequent reference is made to pencak silat in various contexts, and it even constitutes a specific type of literature and category of film that relate the heroic stories of its masters, never before has a writer attempted to gather comprehensive information about this 'art of self defence'. Therefore, this book by O'ong Maryono could be said to be uncontested. And herein lies its second uniqueness: this encyclopedic book was written not by a graduate in the peace and quiet of his study, but by an expert in silat in the frenzy of the contest arena. Henri Chambert-Loir Director Ecole Fran9ais D'Extreme-Orient
