The Box I Live In

Book Description

The stigma of mental health is still all too real. Too many people are continuing to struggle alone, in the dark, too afraid to ask for help. Far too often, many of these individuals happen to be people of color who still view the conversation surrounding mental health as a taboo subject to discuss. As we continue having tough conversations surrounding the experiences of black, indigenous and people of color throughout our society, I think it is more than vital that we discuss the mental health experiences of this population. Often underserved and left without adequate psychological services, people of color continue to suffer in silence without many places to turn to. Through these six stories, The Box I Live In aims to shine a bright light on the experiences of people everywhere, while also illuminating the racial disparities within the mental healthcare system.

Living Beyond the Box

Book Description

During my early work, The Box and several other visual models became useful tools for those wanting to know how to motivate people to learn. Since then, I have used those models to train thousands of parents, teachers, counselors and managers. This book was written for those who would like to apply many of the principles and ideas surrounding The Box in their everyday lives. There are two goals that drove the writing of this book. The primary goal is to free you to live and learn beyond The Box. The secondary goal is to help you free others to live and learn beyond The Box.

The kind that deserves those sacrifices. It's horror, the kind most of us know in some shape or form.

Life In A Box

Book Description

Auction catalogues can reveal a lot about a person: their life, their loves and their style. Antique jewellery dealer Sarah Jane Adams became an international model and overnight Instagram sensation in her sixties. She tells her story through a lifetime's collection of rare pieces and worthless objects, as well as personal photographs and effects from her 'estate'. Told with wit, pathos and charm. Life In A Box illustrates the deeply personal connection that we have with our belongings: they are laden with rich meaning and adventure and, above all, redolent of our stories.

Enveloped Lives

Book Description

Handing envelopes containing money or gifts to doctors in public health care is often seen as a remnant of socialism that continues as an integral part of the Lithuanian health care system. Rima Praspaliauskiene uses the envelope to explore complex doctor-patient interactions that go beyond notions of the gift or the bribe. She reshapes our definition of corruption and encourages seeing these practices as emerging forms of care that impede the neoliberal health care reforms effected in the post-Soviet era. Enveloped Lives extends the analytical categories of gift, care, money, and transparency, shifting attention away from material transactions by prioritizing relations and practices that transcend economic rationality. At a time when health care reforms and the costs of care are being widely debated, this book is a contribution to the larger discussion about the ethics and future of health care around the world.

Still Life Painting Atelier

Book Description

The equivalent of a foundation course in traditional oil painting for beginning to intermediate level artists, this in-depth book uses the still life as a practical way to master oil techniques. The still life is a practical, forgiving genre as it does not require the likeness of a portrait or the accurate proportions of the figure and, unlike the landscape, it doesn’t change with the weather. Instead, it gives aspiring artists ample time to study and the opportunity to look closer. It can be used as a purely formal subject for drawing and painting techniques, or a platform for emotional expression using personal symbolism and imagery. However, though the still life is used throughout as a teaching tool, this is first and foremost a book about oil painting. It begins with simple compositions that build to more complex arrangements. Starting with essential information on how to best set up your studio—including lighting, equipment, materials (paints, solvents, brushes, mediums), and preparing your canvas and paper for oil painting—Still Life Painting Atelier then offers concrete lessons in a logical progressive sequence, with step-by-step illustrations, finished paintings, diagrams and tips. Chapters cover: • How to address composition through thumbnail sketches and line drawings • Using underpainting to study the characteristics of light and shade • The basics of color theory and color mixing • How to use a variety of brushes to create sharp and soft edges • Techniques that are helpful when painting metal and glass • How to apply glazing and scumbling to bring luminosity and texture

Book Description

During the fourteen years Sydney Howard Gay edited the American Anti-Slavery Society's National Anti-Slavery Standard in New York City, he worked with some of the most important Underground agents in the eastern United States, including Thomas Garrett, William Still and James Miller McKim. Gay's closest associate was Louis Napoleon, a free black man who played a major role in the James Kirk and Lemmon cases. For more than two years, Gay kept a record of the fugitives he and Napoleon aided. These never before published records are annotated in this book. Revealing how Gay was drawn into the bitter division between Frederick Douglass and William Lloyd Garrison, the work exposes the private opinions that divided abolitionists. It describes the network of black and white men and women who were vital links in the extensive Underground Railroad, conclusively confirming a daily reality.
