Twentieth Century Fugue

Book Description

As an analytical study, the present work is designed for a variety of uses. It necessarily differs from the usual textbook, although the examples and analytical observations provide abundant material for classes. The approach is that of analyzing the various technical aspects of modern fugue, with frequent comparison to earlier styles. Over sixty contemporary examples constitute the main basis of the study, selected to obtain the widest possible representation of composers from 1900 to the present. For special concentration on various technical aspects, certain examples are cited several times in differing contexts. For the scholar and specialist, a rather inclusive bibliography of theoretical works--books, treatises, and periodical articles--plus musical sources is provided. --Adapted from preface.
