Progress in High Energy Physics and Nuclear Safety

Book Description

On September 27 – October 3, 2008 the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on progress in high-energy physics and nuclear safety was held in Yalta, Crimea (see: http://crimea.bitp.kiev.ua and http://arw.bitp.kiev.ua). Nearly 50 leading experts in high-energy and nuclear physics from Eastern and Western Europe as well as from North America participated at the Workshop. The topics of the ARW covered recent results of theoretical and experimental studies in high-energy physics, accelerator, detection and nuclear technologies, as well as problems of nuclear safety in high-energy experimentation and in nuclear - dustry. The forthcoming experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN and cosmic-ray experiments were among the topics of the ARW. An important aspect of the Workshop was the scienti?c collaboration between nuclear physicists from East and West, especially in the ?eld of nuclear safety. The present book contains a selection of invited talks presented at the ARW. The papers are grouped in two parts.

Chiral Dynamics

Book Description

This book provides an authoritative, up to date, overview of the field of chiral dynamics, and also provides an excellent introduction to the field. The workshop is known for the interplay of theory and experiment and as a meeting place for most of the leading researchers in the field. Contents: Theoretical Chiral Dynamics (H Leutwyler); Experimental Chiral Dynamics (A Bernstein); CEBAF at Jefferson Lab, an Overview (B Mecking); Lorentz Invariant Baryon CHPT (T Becher); Sigma-Terms (J Gasser & M Sainio); Theory of Hadronic Atoms (A Rusetsky); Effective Field Theory in Nuclear Physics (M Savage); Nucleon Polarizabilities (B Holstein); Chiral Symmetry in Dense Hadronic Matter (W Weise); The GerasimovOCoDrellOCoHearn Sum Rule (D Drechsel); and other papers. Readership: Researchers, academics and graduate students in nuclear and high energy physics."

Selected Exercises in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Book Description

This book presents more than 300 exercises, with guided solutions, on topics that span both the experimental and the theoretical aspects of particle physics. The exercises are organized by subject, covering kinematics, interactions of particles with matter, particle detectors, hadrons and resonances, electroweak interactions and flavor physics, statistics and data analysis, and accelerators and beam dynamics. Some 200 of the exercises, including 50 in multiple-choice format, derive from exams set by the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Research (INFN) over the past decade to select its scientific staff of experimental researchers. The remainder comprise problems taken from the undergraduate classes at ETH Zurich or inspired by classic textbooks. Whenever appropriate, in-depth information is provided on the source of the problem, and readers will also benefit from the inclusion of bibliographic details and short dissertations on particular topics. This book is an ideal complement to textbooks on experimental and theoretical particle physics and will enable students to evaluate their knowledge and preparedness for exams.

Currents in Astrophysics and Cosmology

Book Description

Currents in Astrophysics and Cosmology focuses primarily on cosmic-ray physics, X-ray, gamma-ray and neutrino astronomy and cosmology, the main research areas of Professor Maurice M. Shapiro, whose 75th birthday the collection of articles celebrates. Professor Shapiro is internationally distinguished for his contributions to the development of cosmic-ray physics. Each chapter is written by a leading scientist in the field. The scope extends from the inner solar system to distant radio galaxies. The book is ideal for graduate students and scientists working in cosmic-ray astrophysics. This valuable survey will be welcomed not only for its articles by world-renowned scientists but also for its coverage of many topics in high-energy astrophysics, the combination of which makes the book unique.
