Excerpt from A Glossary of Reference on Subjects Connected With the Far East Tho present work is nominally a re-issue of a volume which appeared in April 1878 under the same title. That first attempt having met with considerable success, a second edition, revised and greatly enlarged, is now submitted to the public, in the hope that it will prove a still more useful handbook of reference "on subjects connected with the Far East." Any credit for its typographical accuracy - a result so rarely secured in the East-is entirely duo to the efforts of Mr. G. M. H. Playfair and Dr. R. A. Jamieson, who in my absence from Shanghai kindly undertook that most unenviable task. To Mr. Playfair I am also indebted for so much valuable critical assistance, that his name will always be associated in my mind with whatever further meed of praise the public may feel disposed to award. The Yellow Emperor's Classic has become a landmark in the history of Chinese civilization. Since 1949, when this first translation of the olest known document in Chinese medicine was published, traditional medical practice has seen a dynamic revival in China and throughout many countries in the Western world. Elements of this time-honored therapy, including acupuncture and the harmony of human spirit with the natural world, have become part of mainstream medical practice; The Yellow Emperor's Classic provides the historical and philosophical foundation of this practice. Ilza Veith provides an extensive introduction to her monumental translation of this classic work, which is written in the form of a dialogue in which the emperor seeks information from his minister Ch-I Po on all questions of health and the art of healing.
