This is the first book devoted to the interest taken by amateur British collectors in Indian insects between 1750 and 1947, many employed as soldiers and medics by the East India Company. Initially confined to the building up of personal collections (many of which would later form the foundation of the London Natural History Museum’s collection), the early entomologists also donated specimens to the Asiatic Society of Bengal, the Bombay Natural History Society and local museums. Some published their findings in the journals of these institutions. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, interest in entomology shifted to focus on insect pests and their economic impact on forestry and horticulture. The result was the founding of the Institutes of Forestry and Horticulture at Dehra Dun and Pusa, where Indian scientists continue to conduct entomological research today. The present work elucidates this previously under-researched aspect of British insect history, documenting the people, places, publications and institutions associated with the exploration of the rich entomological fauna of the Indian subcontinent.

Mary Elizabeth Barber (1818–1899), born in Britain, arrived in the Cape Colony in 1820 where she spent the rest of her life as a rolling stone, as she lived in and near Grahamstown, the diamond and gold fields, Pietermaritzburg, Malvern near Durban and on various farms in the eastern part of the Cape Colony. She has been perceived as ‘the most advanced woman of her time’, yet her legacy has attracted relatively little attention. She was the first woman ornithologist in South Africa, one of the first who propagated Darwin’s theory of evolution, an early archaeologist, keen botanist and interested lepidopterist. In her scientific writing, she propagated a new gender order; positioned herself as a feminist avant la lettre without relying on difference models and at the same time made use of genuinely racist argumentation. This is the first publication of her edited scientific correspondence. The letters – transcribed by Alan Cohen, who has written a number of biographical articles on Barber and her brothers – are primarily addressed to the entomologist Roland Trimen, the curator of the South African Museum in Cape Town. Today, the letters are housed at the Royal Entomological Society in St Albans. This book also includes a critical introduction by historian Tanja Hammel who has published a number of articles and published a monograph (2019) on Mary Elizabeth Barber.

In 1945, Eddy Sackville-West, Desmond Shawe-Taylor and Eardley Knollys - writers for the New Statesman and a National Trust administrator - purchased Long Crichel House, an old rectory with no electricity and an inadequate water supply. In this improbable place, the last English literary salon began. Quieter and less formal than the famed London literary salons, Long Crichel became an idiosyncratic experiment in communal living. Sackville-West, Shawe-Taylor and Knollys - later joined by the literary critic Raymond Mortimer - became members of one another's surrogate families and their companionship became a stimulus for writing, for them and their guests.
