Excerpt from A Historical Sketch of Sturbridge and Southbridge The suggestions of a learned and higly esteemed friend, first prompted the writer to attempt a brief history of the early and subsequent settlers of Sturbridge. He was led to believe, upon reflection, that such a work would be a memorial of deserved respect and gratitude to our ancestors, and perhaps be, in some degree, useful. Gratitude, for what they had endured and accomplished, not only for themselves, but for posterity; and useful, in whatever their example is worthy of imitation. The relation, which binds us to a venerated ancestry, must be cherished, if after generations would derive practical instruction from the influence of their example. The history of a town has many features bearing a strong resemblance to that of the nation to which it belongs. It is especially so in those great transactions which are deeply felt in every part. Our struggle for independence (which ought to be kept in perpetual remembrance) united the combined efforts of every section of the confederacy, and was equally beneficial to every part in its momentous results. The inhabitants of a town may feel a laudable pride in the reflection, that their fathers bore a distinguished part in the accomplishment of so great a common blessing. We have, with considerable research, endeavored to ascertain the names of all, who, from this town, bore arms in the French and Revolutionary wars. With many of those venerated men, the writer was personally acquainted, and was enabled, by aiding them, in procuring pensions, to become more particularly acquainted with their revolutionary services. Rejecting traditional notions of what constitutes art, this book brings together essays on a variety of fiber arts to recoup women's artistic practices by redefining what counts as art. Although scholars over the last twenty years have turned their attention to fiber arts, redefining the conditions, practices, and products as art, there is still much work to be done to deconstruct the stubborn patriarchal art/craft binary. With essays on a range of fiber art practices, including embroidery, knitting, crocheting, machine stitching, rug making, weaving, and quilting, this collection contributes to the ongoing scholarly redefinition of women's relationship to creative activity. Focusing on women as producers of cultural products and creators of social value, the contributors treat women as active subjects and problematize their material practices and artifacts in the complex world of textiles. Each essay also examines the ways in which needlework both performs gender and, in turn, constructs gender. Moreover, in concentrating on and theorizing material practices of textiles, these essays reorient the study of fiber arts towards a focus on process?the making of the object, including the conditions under which it was made, by whom, and for what purpose?as a way to rethink the fiber arts as social praxis.
