Handbook for Evaluating Knowledge-Based Systems

Knowledge-based systems are increasingly found in a wide variety of settings and this handbook has been written to meet a specific need in their widening use. While there have been many successful applications of knowledge-based systems, some applications have failed because they never received the corrective feedback that evaluation provides for keeping development focused on the users' needs in their actual working environment. This handbook provides a conceptual framework and compendium of methods for performing evaluations of knowledge-based systems during their development. Its focus is on the users' and subject matter experts' evaluation of the usefulness of the system, and not on the developers' testing of the adequacy of the programming code. The handbook permits evaluators to systematically answer the following kinds of questions: Does the knowledge-based system meet the users' task requirements? Is the system easy to use? Is the knowledge base logically consistent? Does it meet the required level of expertise? Does the system improve performance? The authors have produced a handbook that will serve two audiences: a tool that can be used to create knowledge-based systems (practitioners, developers, and evaluators) and a framework that will stimulate more research in the area (academic researchers and students). To accomplish this, the handbook is built around a conceptual framework that integrates the different types of evaluations into the system of development process. The kinds of questions that can be answered, and the methods available for answering them, will change throughout the system development life cycle. And throughout this process, one needs to know what can be done, and what can't. It is this dichotomy that addresses needs in both the practitioner and academic research audiences.




Knowledge-Based Integrated Aircraft Design

The design and development of new aircraft are becoming increasingly expensive and timeconsuming. To assist the design process in reducing the development cost, time, and late design changes, the conceptual design needs enhancement using new tools and methods. Integration of several disciplines in the conceptual design as one entity enables to keep the design process intact at every step and obtain a high understanding of the aircraft concepts at early stages. This thesis presents a Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE) approach and integration of several disciplines in a holistic approach for use in aircraft conceptual design. KBE allows the reuse of obtained aircrafts’ data, information, and knowledge to gain more awareness and a better understanding of the concept under consideration at early stages of design. For this purpose, Knowledge-Based (KB) methodologies are investigated for enhanced geometrical representation and enable variable fidelity tools and Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO). The geometry parameterization techniques are qualitative approaches that produce quantitative results in terms of both robustness and flexibility of the design parameterization. The information/parameters from all tools/disciplines and the design intent of the generated concepts are saved and shared via a central database. The integrated framework facilitates multi-fidelity analysis, combining low-fidelity models with high-fidelity models for a quick estimation, enabling a rapid analysis and enhancing the time for a MDO process. The geometry is further propagated to other disciplines [Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Element Analysis (FEA)] for analysis. This is possible with an automated streamlined process (for CFD, FEM, system simulation) to analyze and increase knowledge early in the design process. Several processes were studied to streamline the geometry for CFD. Two working practices, one for parametric geometry and another for KB geometry are presented for automatic mesh generation. It is observed that analytical methods provide quicker weight estimation of the design and when coupled with KBE provide a better understanding. Integration of 1-D and 3-D models offers the best of both models: faster simulation, and superior geometrical representation. To validate both the framework and concepts generated from the tools, they are implemented in academia in several courses at Linköping University and in industry




A Framework for Conceptual Design Decision Support

The decisions made at the conceptual design stage are crucial to the overall success of the product as they affect all the downstream phases of the product life cycle, the user satisfaction of the product and the environment that the product is used and disposed of. The consequences due to these design decisions could therefore be good or problematic. Due to the lack of availability of knowledge and understanding about the complexity of such knowledge spanning these different areas, designers find it difficult to know the implications of their decisions made at the conceptual stage on the product's life cycle, the user of the product and the environment in which the product operates. Reviews of existing methodologies reveal that there is a, need for a holistic view of knowledge in terms of the total context of the design problem under consideration to aid designers in their decision making at the conceptual design stage. This thesis addresses this problem by proposing, implementing and evaluating a computational framework for supporting decision making at the conceptual design stage. The need for considering the implications of design decisions on other life cycle stages of the product and using the whole context of the design problem lead to the characterization and formalization of the Design Context Knowledge into different groups and context knowledge categories. This structuring facilitates the creation of feasible design solutions composed of what is called Product Design Elements (PDEs) i.e. basic elements as a functional means to constitute a conceptual product design solution. The proposed Function to POE mapping model uses the aforesaid design context knowledge structured in different categories for reasoning and eliciting consequences, associated with selecting a particular design solution and determining its implications on the product's subsequent life cycle stages, user of the product and on the product itself. After developing a system architecture model based on the system requirements, the PROCONDES prototype system has been implemented for a sheet metal component design domain. An evaluation of PROCONDES performed by conducting a case study indicates the importance of design context knowledge in proactively supporting effective decision making during function to POE mapping process (i.e. conceptual design stage) by generating timely potential (good and problematic) consequences. However, further work is required to improve the model and its implementation to fully explore the approach and use of PROCONDES for real-time design scenarios.




Modeling Creativity and Knowledge-Based Creative Design

Over the last decade research into design processes utilizing ideas and models drawn from artificial intelligence has resulted in a better understanding of design -- particularly routine design -- as a process. Indeed, most of the current research activity directly or indirectly deals only with routine design. Not surprisingly, many practicing designers state that the level of understanding represented by these models is only of mild interest because they fail to embody any ideas about creativity.
