A Load of Bull

Book Description

A Load Of Bull is the true story of an Englishman finding his way in one of the most perplexing, anarchic and exuberant cities on earth: Madrid. In the late 80's Tim Parfitt blagged his way into a job at Condé Nast in London and, from there, into a six week stint in Madrid to help launch Spanish Vogue. Six weeks turned into nine years, and helping out turned into running the company. Tim Parfitt never saw a Costa and he certainly never bought an olive grove. Instead, he discovered a booming city in hedonistic reaction to years of facism, where sleep was something you only did at work. Tim Parfitt's rise from unwanted guest to paparazzi pursued mover in Spain's glamorous social scene is a hilarious comedy of errors. 'Hugely entertaining memoir ... frequently laugh-out-loud funny' Daily Express 'A love letter to Madrid ... brilliantly captures a truly eccentric and hedonistic place' Daily Mirror 'Parfitt's light touch and neat line in self-deprecating humour perfectly suits this entertaining urban spin on the old tale of Brits having fun under the Spanish sun' Sunday Times 'Vivid yet affectionate ... fascinating, escapist stuff' OK! Magazine 'Will do for Madrid what 'Driving over Lemons' has done for Andalucia.' Spain Magazine

A Load'a Bull

Book Description

The day had finally arrived... I intentionally woke up early, because I had still a number of things to do. I had to pack the remaining items of clothing and various household items, which I had accumulated after I moved out of the family home. The reason for me taking such drastic measures, was due to the fall-out of my pending court hearing. I moved into a crappy little bedsit in Stoke Poges. (Near Slough). I finished off gathering up those last articles and loaded them into my car; then to be transported to my lock-up in Maidenhead. I had to be at Reading Crown Court for 10.30 am... My plan; was to store the last of my stuff in a rented garage, then drive over to an industrial estate in Langley (near Slough). There I would park my car, then walk around the corner to the railway station. From there, I would catch the 09.25 to Reading.I knew that the Court was only a few minutes' walk from Reading railway station, so it would make sense to leave my car somewhere safe in Langley, then travel by rail to Reading for my court appearance. I had waited nearly a year for this day to arrive, having been to the Maidenhead Magistrates Court twice to have my offences referred to Crown. I wasn't going to bother with any kind of legal representation, after all, I was guilty as hell, and the authorities had me banged to rights! I was ex-army, and knew that when one was caught doing something wrong, one held up ones hands and accepted the consequences, and the punishment without question.

Load of Bull

Book Description

"Amanda King grew up in Brisbane, Australia, and like so many young Australasians before her, she eventually headed off on her OE. On her travels, she met a Kiwi farmer, and ended up living on a farm in Canterbury, New Zealand, and falling head-over-heels in love with country life as well as the farmer! Photography started off as a favourite hobby -a way to capture unique split-second scenes and make them last a lifetime. Her business really began when she decided to create a large wall print for her own living room. An opportunity arose to photograph a stunning highland cow. The resulting animal print became the focal point of the room and friends started requesting similar pieces. This inspired her to head out and take photos of other rural animals. That led to a 'hobby' Facebook page. Unexpectedly, and very quickly, people started to respond to the images. Before too long, and much to her delight, Amanda found herself with a full-time business on her hands. In this book she has collected her favourite prints and arranged them by breed: Angus; Belted Galloway; Bison; Brahman; Charolais; Friesian; Hereford; Highland; Jersey; Limousin; Murray Grey; Red Devon; Shorthorn; Speckle Park; Texas Longhorn; Wagyu; White Galloway; and Zebu. Amanda also tells brief stories of some of these animals, their personalities, and how the shoot day went"--Publisher information.

On Bullshit

Book Description

#1 New York Times bestseller Featured on The Daily Show and 60 Minutes The acclaimed book that illuminates our world and its politics by revealing why bullshit is more dangerous than lying One of the most prominent features of our world is that there is so much bullshit. Yet we have no clear understanding of what bullshit is, how it’s distinct from lying, what functions it serves, and what it means. In his acclaimed bestseller On Bullshit, Harry Frankfurt, who was one of the world’s most influential moral philosophers, explores this important subject, which has become a central problem of politics and our world. With his characteristic combination of philosophical acuity, psychological insight, and wry humor, Frankfurt argues that bullshitters misrepresent themselves to their audience not as liars do, that is, by deliberately making false claims about what is true. Rather, bullshitters seek to convey a certain impression of themselves without being concerned about whether anything at all is true. They quietly change the rules governing their end of the conversation so that claims about truth and falsity are irrelevant. Although bullshit can take many innocent forms, excessive indulgence in it can eventually undermine the bullshitter’s capacity to tell the truth in a way that lying does not. Liars at least acknowledge that the truth matters. Because of this, bullshit is a greater enemy of the truth than lies are. Remarkably prescient and insightful, On Bullshit is a small book that explains a great deal about our time.
