Excerpt from Family and Private Prayers To this Manual of Devotion which, as it was remarked in the preface to the first edition, was taken chiefly from the Liturgy, a second part was added in the next, which Was compiled, in a great measure, from the Writings of devout and godly men in the Church of England. Both of these have now been carefully revised, and, as it is be. Licved, in some respects improved. A third part, derived in a degree from the same sources, has been added in the present edition, which is altogether new. The selections of Psalms prefixed to the Prayers for each morning and evening, and the versicles and litanies which are to be used responsively, it is thought will serve to fix the at: tention of the young, and heighten' the interest of all in the celebration of Family Worship. The prayers for the sick and afflicted were, for the most part, prepared for particular occasions and emergencies, as they arose in the actual discharge of pastoral duty. It may readily be supposed that in a compilation from such a variety of sources, there must have been no slight degree of diffi culty.
