Medicine and Nursing (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Medicine and Nursing The American Medical Association holds a posi tion among the great medical societies Of the world in many ways unlike that Of any other. Born Of a. Felt want among the members Of a profession widely scattered, in a comparatively new and imperfectly developed country, it struggled along in the weak ness of its infancy, conquering the disadvantages Of great distances, compassed by comparatively slow, tedious, and expensive means of travel. In no profession is it perhaps more true that the physician, in the large share, is the representative citizen, and no matter how devoted he may be to his profession, he ever manifests a deep and earnest interest 'in the body politic, of which he is an inte gral part. Under the stimulus Of the civilizing and develop ing forces Of the present, the activities Of life are intensified as never before, and wherever the Ameri can citizen determines his residence, he immediately looks about him to ascertain in what way he can become an active, formative factor, and paints with roseate tint the horizon Of the future, in the confi dent belief that the new settlement is soon to be the town, the town the city, until the broad acres of unproductive pasture are mentally divided into cor ner lots and, by some mysterious, unknown influence, populated by the leaders in the great subdivided interests Of the world Of trade. The Family Physician

Book Description

Excerpt from The Family Physician: Being a Domestic Medical Work, Written in Plain Style, and Divided Into Four Parts In writing the present Volume, I have. Endeavored to be as plain and as explicit as possible. Iam opposed to too much prolixity in any medical work intended for the use of private individuals; consequently, I have been as brief as the nature of the case would admit. All technicalities have been carefully avoided, making the work perfectly plain to an ordinary scholar. Such diseases as require the immediate attendance of the Physician, I have not treated upon', further than to point out the symptoms, fearing that persons may delay calling in a Physician until it be too late. Like all writers on the practice of medicine, I have only been able to lay down general plans of treatment; but, I assure the reader, with that candor which I hope will ever characterize my life, that general or undeviating plans will not always answer the purpose intended. The disease Should be treated agreeably to the symptoms manifested, and should the complaint vary from its ordinary course, the treatment should vary also. I know there are Physicians in our County, of age and experience, who contend for an universal course of treatment, to be pursued in all patients laboring under the same disease; but I care not for the opin ions of any Physician, however aged he may be, when the)r are' so destitute of reason. Men often grow gray in igno rance and folly, and the Physician should be judged by his success in practice, and not by his age. I hope, however. The Family Nurse, Or Companion of the Frugal Housewife (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Family Nurse, or Companion of the Frugal Housewife This book merely contains the elements of nursing, and is by no means intended to supersede the advice of a physician. It is simply a household friend, which the inexperienced may consult on common occasions, or sudden emergencies, when medical advice is either nu necessary, or cannot be obtained. Among the variety of books consulted for this pur pose, those which have been most carefully examined are Dewees on the Diseases of Women Dewees on the Diseases of Children; Bigelow's Medical Botany Thatcher's Modern Practice Thatcher's Dispensa tory; and Wood's and Bache's Dispensatory. From The Young Lady's Friend I have likewise taken many useful hints. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Family Physician and Guide to Health

Book Description

Excerpt from The Family Physician and Guide to Health: A System of Domestic Medicine; Including a Treatise on Midwifery and the Diseases Peculiar to Women I have no apology to offer. I have done the very best I could in preparing the matter for this work. I have diligently consulted the ablest, latest and best authori ties in medical literature, coming from both Europe and America, and have tried hard to present the accepted facts of the history, symptoms and treatment of diseases in plain, simple and common-place language, so that every school boy or girl of intelligence can understand and comprehend them. I have given the' symptoms plainly and laid down the treatment, not only on general principles, but specially, stating exactly what to give, how much of it to give at a time, and how often to giveit. By this means I have placed a great amount of valuable information within easy reach of the common people information, too, upon which may depend their health, happiness or lives, or that of those dependent upon them. I neither deprecate nor invite criticism, believing that the critic has neither a very wide nor profitable field for his fault-finding skill. If my unpresuming book finds favor with the intelligent public, I will be content to let critics fume and fret, and enemies sneer and curl the lip with the scorn they try to feel. A few physicians, from selfish motives, may try to discourage the masses from patronizing the work, but I flatter myself that it will receive the hearty approval of a large majority of those who have kept themselves posted in the standard medical literature of the day. The intelligent physician wants an intelligent and well-informed patient: with such an one his labor is easy and pleasant. It is only those who do not know quite as much as they really should who try to keep the common people in ignorance in regard to the symptoms and treatment of disease. They fear the light of knowledge; they know in it their own feeble light would shine but idimly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Best Family Physician and Household Companion

Book Description

Excerpt from The Best Family Physician and Household Companion: The Mystery of Medicine Explained! Prepared for the Use of Families, Farmers, Mechanics, Travelers, Everybody All the works that I have previously met with, on this sun joet, have invariably attempted too much, by giving directions for treatment that the great mass of their readers would be unwilling to try. I have endeavored to give simple, brief, and safe instructions, so no one need be afraid to follow them. I have, of course, availed myself of all the sources of informa tion possible in the preparation of the work. The study of our own natures is, perhaps, the most elevating and ennobling subject which can engage the mind, and we ought to deem it as much a part of our sacred duty to promote physical health and happiness in this life, as to prepare our spirits for the fruition of a happy immortality. Knowing the weight of responsibility resting upon me in issuing a volume like this, for the guidance, comfort, and benefit of my fellow-beings, I feel to implore the blessings of God, that my labors be not in vain. Medical Essays

Book Description

Excerpt from Medical Essays: Compiled From Reports to the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery Notwithstanding the general knowledge of the fact that the better mode of relieving human flesh of the ills to which it is heir is to prevent them, very little is done toward lessening the amount of physical suffering among mankind. Not only are individuals improvident of health, but public communities neglect precautions that would avert many attacks of disease; and even governments, having control of armies and navies, are unmindful of preventive measures which would diminish the expense and promote the efficiency of these bodies. It ought to be unnecessary to urge the importance of naval hygiene. If it be so requisite to study what to do and what to leave undone on shore, where everything demanded for the healthy maintenance of the body is in abundance, how much more strictly ought the laws of health to be observed on board ship, where human beings are crowded together in violation of all these laws, breathing a scanty supply of air vitiated by the retention of their own excretions, subsisting upon an unwholesome diet, their sleep always interrupted, and their minds continually disquieted by passions called into operation by the unnatural circumstances of their lives. Yet no sanitary code has ever been promulgated in our own service, nor, until recent years, has it been attempted elsewhere. The young medical officer is without a guide. As much confused by the manners of those around him as by the maze of rigging overhead, he credits whatever he is told and accepts, "it is the custom of the service," as palliating whatever appears barbarous and unnatural.
