The Sea Shore (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Sea Shore Let both, however, cast aside any predisposition to look upon the naturalist's employment as arduous and toilsome, and make up their minds to look enquiringly into the living world around them, and they will soon find that they are led onward from the study Of one Object to another, the employ ment becoming more and more fascinating as they proceed. Our aim in writing the following pages is to encourage the Observation Of the nature and life of_ the sea shore; to give such assistance to the beginner as will show him where the most interesting Objects are to be found, and how he should set to work to Obtain them. Practical hints are also furnished to enable the reader to successfully establish and maintain a salt-water aquarium for the Observation Of marine life at home, and to preserve various marine Objects for the purpose of forming a study-collection of the common objects Of the shore. To have given a detailed description of all such Objects would have been impossible in a work of this size, but a large number have been described and figured, and the broad principles Of the classification of marine animals and plants have been given such prominence that, it is hoped, even the younger readers will find but little difficulty in determining the approximate positions, in the scale of life, Of the various living things that come within their reach. Of the many illustrations, which must necessarily greatly assist the reader in understanding the structure of the selected types and in the identification Of the different species, a large number have been prepared especially for this work. Animal Life by the Sea-Shore (Classic Reprint)

Far from attempting anything in the way of an exhaustive or strictly scientific manual, they have only tried to provide those untrained in zoology with a means of identifying the principal of the innumerable forms of animal life which are likely to attract their attention when on the beach, or, better, on the rocks and beds of weeds uncovered by the great ebb tides which afford such grand opportunities in the western parts of the English Channel; and also of acquiring some notions concerning the often puzzling organs displayed by these creatures, their functions, as well as some of the most salient facts of their life-histories. Rambles and Reveries of a Naturalist (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Rambles and Reveries of a Naturalist This little volume of Natural History sketches has very little to do with opinions or speculations. The aim of the writer has been to describe the facts and phenomena of Nature as they have appeared to present themselves to his own observation. They are life-pictures rather than compilations. So far as systematic arrangement is concerned, there has certainly been an effort to treat each subject taken up in such a way as to lay at least a stepping-stone on the path to a more serious contemplation of the sciences of the text-book and the laboratory, but the primary intention of the author has been rather to awaken or to stimulate a love for Nature in the minds of some who may not as yet have suspected what wondrous and ever-varying beauty lies everywhere about us in ditch and pond, in rock and stone, in river and sea, on earth and in the skies.
