A New System of Geography, Vol. 4 of 6

Book Description

Excerpt from A New System of Geography, Vol. 4 of 6: In Which Is Given, a General Account of the Situation and Limits, the Manners, History, and Constitution, of the Several Kingdoms and States in the Known World; And a Very Particular Description of Their Subdivisions and Dependencies; Their Cities and Tow Of the many charts extant of Germany, that by Homann published in the year 1741, and methodically illuminated according to Schatzs. principles: with the large charts executed on four sheets by Eisenschmid, and published also by Homann, are the most useful. But of how little service these and all the other charts hitherto extant of Germany are, will appear upon a stricter enquiry into their intrinsic value, from the excellent Mappa critica Germania:, executed with unspeakable labour by professor Mayer, and published in 1750, by Homann's heirs. In consequence of which we hitherto know the true situation and distance of about twenty places only, and Germany is, by the old geographers, extended about a whole degree too far to the east. It is therefore much to be wished, for the honour and benefit of Germany, that the patriotic proposal of the Cosmographical Society may be happily carried into execution; according to which each state of the Empire should suffer a Cabinet-Atlas to be taken of their territory by the German Surveying-office, which is under this name incorporated with the Cosmographical Society, and then permit a general chart to be engraved therefrom, which might be afterwards used for executing a chart of all Germany, But as it would require above half a century before a new and complete Atlas of Germany could be formed, even were die execution of this excellent and laudable proposal set about immediately, we muff, in the mean time, content ourselves with Homann's newest Atlas of Germany, which notwithstanding all its imperfections, is the best and most complete, nay, the only work of its kind. It contains all the charts of Germany which Homann has published from the first till the end of the year 1752, the number of which amounts to one hundred and twenty-five. The charts from the year 1753, are collected for a new volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A System of Geography, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 4 of 6 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A System of Geography, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 4 of 6 When Germany first attracted the attention of the Romans, it was much colder than it is at present. The Rhine and the Danube were frequently frozen over and capable of supporting the heaviest waggons and the rein-deer was a native of those parts, though he: cannot now sub sist in any country to the south of the Baltic. The extreme cold of ancient Germany was no doubt owing chiefly to' the extensive morasses and forests that covered the surface of the country, and intercepted the rays of the sun. The woods have been long ago cleared, the marshes drained, and the soil cultivated; so that the climate has become more temperate.
