A Power Primer - An Introduction to the Internal Combustion Engine

Book Description

“ ... This might be called a "sketch book of engines." Pictures have been substituted for words wherever possible, and the technical language has been held to a minimum. Most people today have at least a nodding acquaintance with the internal combustion engine. To the great majority it is what makes an automobile go. But to others it may be the motive power for a tractor or truck, a cruiser or a tug-boat, a fighter plane or a transport. It may furnish power and light to an isolated farm, to a saw-mill in the woods, or to an entire city. For today the internal combustion engine has invaded all fields, from the bottom of the ocean to the limits of the heavens. We will demonstrate that they all are based on three things AIR, FUEL and IGNITION. We need those three things to make any internal combustion engine run. We have rather arbitrarily classified them in three groups: automobile, aircraft, and Diesel...” (1955 - Public Relations Staff GENERAL MOTORS)

An ASIC Low Power Primer

Book Description

This book provides an invaluable primer on the techniques utilized in the design of low power digital semiconductor devices. Readers will benefit from the hands-on approach which starts form the ground-up, explaining with basic examples what power is, how it is measured and how it impacts on the design process of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). The authors use both the Unified Power Format (UPF) and Common Power Format (CPF) to describe in detail the power intent for an ASIC and then guide readers through a variety of architectural and implementation techniques that will help meet the power intent. From analyzing system power consumption, to techniques that can be employed in a low power design, to a detailed description of two alternate standards for capturing the power directives at various phases of the design, this book is filled with information that will give ASIC designers a competitive edge in low-power design.

Statistical Power Analysis for the Behavioral Sciences

Book Description

Statistical Power Analysis is a nontechnical guide to power analysis in research planning that provides users of applied statistics with the tools they need for more effective analysis. The Second Edition includes: * a chapter covering power analysis in set correlation and multivariate methods; * a chapter considering effect size, psychometric reliability, and the efficacy of "qualifying" dependent variables and; * expanded power and sample size tables for multiple regression/correlation.

This Little Trailblazer

Book Description

This board book highlights ten memorable female trailblazers.

A Foucault Primer

Book Description

Who are we today? That deceptively simple question continued to be asked by the French historian and philosopher, Michel Foucault, who for the last three decades has had a profound influence on English-speaking scholars in the humanities and social sciences.; This text is designed for undergraduates and others who feel in need of some assistance when coming to grips with Foucault's voluminous and complex writings. Instead of dealing with them chronologically, however, this book concentrates on some of their central concepts, primarily Foucault's rethinking of the categories of "discourse", "power", and " the subject".; Foucault's writings contribute collectively to what he himself calls "an ontology of the present". His historical research was always geared towards showing how things could have been and still could be otherwise. This is especially the case with respect to the production of human subjects.

Power Primer

Book Description

Annotation "Penn Well's new Power Primer: A Nontechnical Guide from Generation to End-Use, offers a detailed look at how electricity is generated, transmitted, and distributed. Opening with an overview of electricity - what it is and how it works "from plant to plug"--The book then provides a history of the electric power industry. Section two explains generation - plants, components, and systems - and section three covers transmission and distribution - equipment, facilities, and their functions. The conclusion consists of an appendix that profiles the business, cultural, and political ramifications of deregulation."--BOOK JACKET. Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Iran Primer

Book Description

A comprehensive but concise overview of Iran's politics, economy, military, foreign policy, and nuclear program. The volume chronicles U.S.-Iran relations under six American presidents and probes five options for dealing with Iran. Organized thematically, this book provides top-level briefings by 50 top experts on Iran (both Iranian and Western authors) and is a practical and accessible "go-to" resource for practitioners, policymakers, academics, and students, as well as a fascinating wealth of information for anyone interested in understanding Iran's pivotal role in world politics.

State-Building in Kosovo

Book Description

The history of Kosovo is a complicated one which typifies the darker side of modern Balkan history. Milosevic s Serbia withdrew from Kosovo in 1999 and the province was handed over to a special UN body who governed until 2008, when the West allowed Kosovo to become independent. The aim was to erect a stable and well governed democracy, but the outcome was a fragile state, which still threatens the stability of the Balkans and Europe s internal security. How did this happen? Here, Andrea Lorenzo Capussela offers an inside look at the process of building democracy in Kosovo. As head of the economics unit of Kosovo s international supervisor, Capussela has had access to previously unknown sources and information regarding the roles of the EU and the US in the crisis. This will be an essential reading for those studying the Kosovo crisis.

A Primer of Real Analytic Functions

Book Description

The subject of real analytic functions is one of the oldest in mathe matical analysis. Today it is encountered early in ones mathematical training: the first taste usually comes in calculus. While most work ing mathematicians use real analytic functions from time to time in their work, the vast lore of real analytic functions remains obscure and buried in the literature. It is remarkable that the most accessible treatment of Puiseux's theorem is in Lefschetz's quite old Algebraic Geometry, that the clearest discussion of resolution of singularities for real analytic manifolds is in a book review by Michael Atiyah, that there is no comprehensive discussion in print of the embedding prob lem for real analytic manifolds. We have had occasion in our collaborative research to become ac quainted with both the history and the scope of the theory of real analytic functions. It seems both appropriate and timely for us to gather together this information in a single volume. The material presented here is of three kinds. The elementary topics, covered in Chapter 1, are presented in great detail. Even results like a real ana lytic inverse function theorem are difficult to find in the literature, and we take pains here to present such topics carefully. Topics of middling difficulty, such as separate real analyticity, Puiseux series, the FBI transform, and related ideas (Chapters 2-4), are covered thoroughly but rather more briskly.

Statistical Power Analysis

Book Description

This program, companion software to the text "Statistical Power Analysis, Second Edition, " includes the following features: * Spreadsheet Input. Data may be entered by means of a spreadsheet interface. As any cells in the spreadsheet (Mean, SD, N, Alpha, Tails, etc.) are modified by the user, the value of Effect Size and Power are simultaneously updated. * Graphic Input. Alternatively, data may be entered by means of a graphic interface. Cursor keys are used to modify graphs of the group distributions, and the value of power is updated in response. * Active HELP Screens. In addition to providing instructions and explanations, the HELP screens function as worksheets which enable the user to compute various parameters and return these values to the program. * Simulations. The program can run on-screen Monte Carlo simulations, repeatedly drawing samples from a user-defined population and testing each sample for significance. Useful for teaching! * Tables and Graphs. The program creates both tables and graphs of power as a function of N, Effect Size (Mean Difference, Correlation, etc.) and Alpha. Interface with graphics programs generates presentation quality graphics. * Procedures. The program produces power analyses for designs using t-Tests, Correlations, Proportions (Chi- square with or without Yates correction), Oneway and Factorial ANOVA/ANCOVA, and Multiple/Hierarchical regression. The program runs on any IBM or compatible computer; all functions work properly on monochrome as well as on color monitors. A 185-page manual is also available with the software. Please specify disk size (5.25 or 3.5) when ordering.
