Im vorliegenden Band 3/2008 berichtet Herr Eckert uber die Ergebnisse aus Untersuchungen zur Partikel- und Stickoxidminimierung bei Dieselmotoren durch Wassereinbringung. Das primare Ziel ist dabei die innermotorische Reduzierung der thermischen Stickoxidbildung. Es sind unterschiedliche Methoden der wassereinbringung in den dieselmotorischen Verbrennungsprozess moglich; beispielsweise die Einspritzung von Wasser in das Ansaugsystem, eine direkte Einspritzung von Wasser in den Brennraum sowie die Wassereinbringung mit Diesel- Wasser Emulsionen. Diese Massnahmen sind unter anderem bei dieselmotoren, die zumindest teilweise mit Schwerol betrieben werden, besonders interessant, da dort klassische Methoden zur Schadstoffreduktion, wie z.B. Abgasruckfuhrung oder Abgasnachbehandlung, nur mit erheblichem Aufwand eingesetzt werden konnen.




IMPACT OF WATER INGESTION ON COMBUSTION PERFORMANCE IN A SPARK IGNITED INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

Abstract : This study experimentally investigated the effect of unintended water ingestion on a spark ignited internal combustion engine. Testing was performed on a 2.0L inline four cylinder turbocharged engine. Port water injection (with two different levels of atomization) was utilized to introduce water into the combustion system. Five speed / load points were tested from 1300 rpm 3 bar BMEP to 3250 rpm 15 bar BMEP. Testing was done with constant air charge as well as constant throttle emulating the in-vehicle scenario. The water to fuel ratio (W/F) was swept until COV of IMEP reached at least 20% and misfires were detected. With the addition of water, initially combustion performance degrades rapidly, however, once water vapor reaches saturation in the manifold, additional water has less of an impact, until ultimately in-cylinder water content is high enough to induce misfire. High engine loads are seen to be more resistant to combustion degradation due to water ingestion.

The transport sector continues to shift towards alternative powertrains, particularly with the UK Government’s announcement to end the sale of petrol and diesel passenger cars by 2030 and increasing support for alternatives. Despite this announcement, the internal combustion continues to play a significant role both in the passenger car market through the use of hybrids and sustainable low carbon fuels, as well as a key role in other sectors such as heavy-duty vehicles and off-highway applications across the globe. Building on the industry-leading IC Engines conference, the 2021 Powertrain Systems for Net-Zero Transport conference (7-8 December 2021, London, UK) focussed on the internal combustion engine’s role in Net-Zero transport as well as covered developments in the wide range of propulsion systems available (electric, fuel cell, sustainable fuels etc) and their associated powertrains. To achieve the net-zero transport across the globe, the life-cycle analysis of future powertrain and energy was also discussed.
