The Study of the Behavior of an Individual Child

Book Description

Excerpt from The Study of the Behavior of an Individual Child: Syllabus and Bibliography This Syllabus is the outgrowth of attempts to direct prospective teachers in classes in Education to understand child life in the city. In doing this work it has been found more effective to study individual cases rather than the child as a type or children in general. As soon as a young woman has assumed responsibility for the study and care of an individual child she has sought for general material and for advice to help her understand her problem. The fundamental assumption underlying the course is that the child is like other living creatures. Placed under the artificial environment of the city he is handicapped in many respects and it is the business of education to remove such handicaps so far as possible. In order to do this, it is necessary to understand the child's life in detail and to see the kind of conditions essential for his proper growth. No attempts at completeness have been made in either the Syllabus or the Bibliography. The object has been to suggest lines of study for persons who are not expert investigators but who are to become teachers of the young. The books and references given are such as are available to beginning students. In offering the work to the public the author hopes that it may serve to ameliorate the lot of children in the city. The Essentials of Child Study

Book Description

Excerpt from The Essentials of Child Study: Including Class Outlines, Brief Discussions, Topical References, and a Complete Bibliography The Essentials of Child Study has grown out of twenty-one years' experience in teaching the subject in the University of Nebraska. It represents the nucleus of a three hour college course for one semester of eighteen weeks, consisting of fifty-two class periods of fifty minutes each. It had its beginning in a series of class outlines prepared primarily for college students having had the equivalent of six hours' credit in biology and as many more hours' credit in psychology as a foundation to the study. To these outlines have been added from time to time new material showing the results of experimentation, calling attention to important child study literature, and giving in connection with each topic such information as will make clear the essentials in a course of child study. The Essentials of Child Study is used as a text in the beginning course of Child Study in the University of Nebraska and covers the nature, growth and development of the child from birth to adolescence - in a few instances through adolescence. The thread of thot running thru the whole is the changing nature and intelligent nurture of the child. It aims to give in a condensed form the essential facts that ought to be known by every student of childhood, teacher, and parent. It is published for the benefit of students who make such constant use of it, and to supply the demand for the former Child Study Outlines from which it grew. Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth Through Age 8, Fourth Edition (Fully Revised and Updated)

Book Description

The long-awaited new edition of NAEYC's book Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Early Childhood Programs is here, fully revised and updated! Since the first edition in 1987, it has been an essential resource for the early childhood education field. Early childhood educators have a professional responsibility to plan and implement intentional, developmentally appropriate learning experiences that promote the social and emotional development, physical development and health, cognitive development, and general learning competencies of each child served. But what is developmentally appropriate practice (DAP)? DAP is a framework designed to promote young children's optimal learning and development through a strengths-based approach to joyful, engaged learning. As educators make decisions to support each child's learning and development, they consider what they know about (1) commonality in children's development and learning, (2) each child as an individual (within the context of their family and community), and (3) everything discernible about the social and cultural contexts for each child, each educator, and the program as a whole. This latest edition of the book is fully revised to underscore the critical role social and cultural contexts play in child development and learning, including new research about implicit bias and teachers' own context and consideration of advances in neuroscience. Educators implement developmentally appropriate practice by recognizing the many assets all young children bring to the early learning program as individuals and as members of families and communities. They also develop an awareness of their own context. Building on each child's strengths, educators design and implement learning settings to help each child achieve their full potential across all domains of development and across all content areas.
