Philosophers have been greatly concerned with the nature of explanation, but no account has been fully satisfactory within science or plausible in the wider world. The author asserts that this is due to a misplaced focus and that instead of focusing on explanation, philosophers should consider understanding. This work outlines his theory and defends it against some objections. Attempts to understand understanding can become self-referential, but the book is intended to enable readers to build a good mental model of the author's theory.

A Theory of Understanding provides a philosophical and psychologically grounded account of understanding. The philosophical tradition has been largely concerned with explanation, seeking to provide characteristics by which an explanation can be distinguished from other types of utterances. Chart argues that this is the wrong approach and proposes that anything which improves understanding should be regarded as an explanation. This approach requires a theory of understanding; Chart proposes a new theory claiming that we understand something when we can predict what it will do under a wide range of possible conditions, and that explanations are statements that improve our understanding. The theory presented sees understanding as a matter of the possession of mental models, which provide the ability to simulate things and situations. Experimental evidence drawn from the cognitive science literature shows that the substantive psychological theory presented is an accurate description of the mind. Setting out a new theory of understanding that draws on both the philosophical and cognitive science traditions, this book presents important insights for philosophers of science and mind, epistemology, and cognitive science.

This is a book about imaginative work and its relationship with the construction of knowledge. It is fully acknowledged by epistemologists that imagination is not something opposed to rationality; it is not mere fantasy opposed to intellect. In philosophy and cognitive sciences, imagination is generally “delimiting not much more than the mental ability to interact cognitively with things that are not now present via the senses.” (Stuart, 2017, p. 11) For centuries, scholars and poets have wondered where this capability could come from, whether it is inspired by divinity or it is a peculiar feature of human mind (Tateo, 2017b). The omnipresence of imaginative work in both every day and highly specialized human activities requires a profoundly radical understanding of this phenomenon. We need to work imaginatively in order to achieve knowledge, thus imagination must be something more than a mere flight of fantasy. Considering different stories in the field of scientific endeavor, I will try to propose the idea that the imaginative process is fundamental higher mental function that concurs in our experiencing, knowing and understanding the world we are part of. This book is thus about a theoretical idea of imagining as constant part of the complex whole we call the human psyche. It is a story of human beings striving not only for knowledge and exploration but also striving for imagining possibilities.​
