Vacation Tour

Book Description

Excerpt from Vacation Tour: In the United States and Canada Then with respect to the route, - that most im portant consideration to the tourist in all lands, and especially in a country yet unblessed by a Murray's Handbook - how labyrinthine were the wanderings traced for me by kind friends l - some bent on sending me well high to the North Pole others to the Dismal swmp and New Orleans; while a few spirited me in imagination across the Rocky Mountains, including a visit to California and the unholy Mormons. The result of all these counsels was hanging a large map of America upon the wall, and tracing on it a route through the United States and Canada; and I rejoice to say I have no reason to repent my decision. A Motor Tour Through Canada (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Motor Tour Through Canada When I set out to see Canada from the Tonneau, by motoring from Halifax to Victoria, I had grave doubts of ever being able to make my destination. People declared that there was no continuous road across the country, and that the broken chain of highways which was to be my medium of progression had so much of the element of chance and vagueness and uncertainty, so much of the promise of adventure and endemic primitiveness, that I should be compelled to include it also in my discoveries. Canada, it was naively suggested, might best be seen by suspending my machine from a balloon and turning it into a kind of amphibious creature, which at times could crawl on the earth and at others fly in the air or swim in the lakes and rivers. An Autumn Tour in the United States

Book Description

Excerpt from An Autumn Tour in the United States: And Canada At intervals during recent years the members of my family have often, in a vague and lighthearted way, talked of a possible prospective trip to the United States and Canada. The idea was always regarded as visionary; but there was a fascination about it that induced us to return to it again and again. In the evening of a pleasant day in July of last year the conversation in the family circle was directed to a forthcoming holiday, and almost unconsciously we reverted to the old topic. In less time than it has taken to write these few lines a tour to the United States in the ensuing Autumn had been resolved upon. The unexpected had happened. Without delay I booked passages on the Cunard steamship "Umbria" for myself, for my daughter, and for my younger son. Three Months in Canada and the United States (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Three Months in Canada and the United States The following pages contain various incidents and particulars of my trip in America and Canada, chiefly collected from a journal which I kept during my tour. My manuscript which I arranged, was seen only by a few of you, as having made a resolution to put it into print I withdrew it. I have no wish to magnify in the least degree what I have been able to aecom plish in the following pages; however, I must say that the production of the same has cost me much time and labour. I am only delighted that I have been so far successful in making a completion of this book, for it has seemed to me many times almost beyond my powers. A Tour in the United States, Cuba, and Canada (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Tour in the United States, Cuba, and Canada Our outgoing passage was boisterous, being early in the month of January. The sleet and snow became frozen, and for some days prevented our taking exercise on deck. The sun was overcast, and many a time prevented the captain from taking his noonday Observations of the course we were steering. The storm broke one of the paddle boxes; the waves entered the chimney; the passengers were confined to the saloon, and, deprived of the power of enjoying out-door exercise, were compelled to fill up the time with reading, chess playing, and other amusements. A Yorkshireman's Trip to the United States and Canada (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Yorkshireman's Trip to the United States and Canada One reason for my appearing in print is, that in my own county of Yorkshire, where I can hope to have the largest proportion of readers, there exists a widespread, but erroneous idea of America, as to its size, its resources, and its capabilities, and though there are thousands of Yorkshire artisans in the States, the information supplied by them to their friends and relatives in the Old Country is generally confined to a description of the features of the immediate locality in which they are living. I have been requested by many friends of those persons who have left the Old Land to seek their fortunes across the water, to give them my impressions of the country, its scenery, and its every day life, and say how their friends are faring in their adopted home. A Six Weeks' Tour in Western Canada (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from A Six Weeks' Tour in Western Canada As it is well to make the best'of everything, we will improve the time here in looking back to 1809, when, on the 6th November, the steamboat Accommodation, built by the enterprise and industry of the Honorable John Molson, made, I am told, her first trip to Quebec, she being the first steamer that ever plied in Canadian waters. She took twenty-four hours to reach Three Rivers, and sixty-six hours to reach Quebec. The fare, which was then nine dollars, is now three for the same distance. As we are very much indebted to the Honorable John Molson for his having persevered in building his steamer, and to accomplish which he had no doubt many difficulties to overcome, I have chosen his portrait as being the most suitable one for my little book; for the first person who carries through any enterprise successfully, accomplishes more than those who follow in his track.
