Excerpt from A Treatise on Integral Calculus and Calculus of Variations In the interval which has elapsed since the publication of the first edition of this work, considerable progress has been made in the Integral Calculus; and much matter of the science which was at that time beyond the range and scope of a didactic treatise has been brought within its limits. I thought fit in that edition to omit the whole theory of Definite Integrals except the barest outline of some of its elementary theorems which were required for subsequent applications; and the Gamma-function and its allied transcendants did not seem to me to be within the scope of an elementary work. Now, on the contrary, no treatise of that character would be complete unless these subjects were discussed at considerable length, and the useful theorems arising out of them, and due to Dirichlet and Liouville, were explained and applied. Excerpt from A Treatise on the Differential and Integral Calculus A knowledge of the principles of this branch of the Pure Mathematics is absolutely necessary, before any one can success fully undertake the perusal of works on Natural Philosophy, in which the effects of the observed laws that govern the material world are reduced to calculation. Excerpt from A Treatise on the Calculus of Variations In a branch of analytical science so abstract as the Calculus of Variations, which originated in solving a particular class of problems, and gra dually reached its present perfect state, little pro gress can be made without constant reference to examples; and probably no student who turns his attention for the first time to the subject of Varia tions, will fully understand the articles 16 - 22, in the following work, until he has applied them to particular instances. I have, therefore, introduced many examples, as the only means of lessening to my readers the difficulties of so abstract a theory. Excerpt from Treatise on Infinitesimal Calculus, Vol. 2: Containing Differential and Integral Calculus, Calculus of Variations, Applications to Algebra and Geometry, and Analytical Mechanics; Integral Calculus and Calculus of Variations The present volume contains Integral Calculus: the Calculus of Variations, and Differential Equations; as a scientific inquiry into these subjects, it differs so much from the English treatises in ordinary use, that it is incumbent on me to say a few words of explana tion. Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on the Differential and Integral Calculus Desirous of contributing to the great work of improvement which was thus in progress, I some time since published the first part of a treatise on Analytic Geometry; a subject which had not then, nor has been yet treated of by any other English author. The favourable manner in which that work has been received has encouraged me in the pro secution of my labours, the result of which I now venture 'to offer to the public.
