Treating fresh aspen chips with an aqueous solution of 0.20 percent potassium N-methyl, N-hydroxymethyldithiocarbamate and 0.05 percent sodium 2-mercaptobenzothiazole has been shown in a laboratory storage environment to be effective in preventing heating, loss in brightness, and growth of micro-organisms in the chips. The results warrant further evaluation of this treatment for preventing deterioration of wood chips during outdoor storage.
