The Architectural Review, Vol. 14

Book Description

Excerpt from The Architectural Review, Vol. 14: January to December, 1907 Opinion and experience seem to favor the latter although both are Open to certain Obvious and common disadvantages. The thinner strands of wire are the more thoroughly imbedded into the plaster, even if only worked from one side, and therefore the more perfectly protected from weather and damp. On the other hand, some claim that the smaller section area Offered by the wire is the more easily corroded by the dampness that must be absorbed by the protecting mortar during a long-continued spell of rainy weather; and that its greater exibility makes the cracking Of plas ter from that cause the more certain. Both metal and wire may be galvanized, which adds to their cost, but the covering of both may be scratched away or injured; and an Opening crack in one, or the untwisting, or breaking apart of a welded joint in the other, would let the moisture into a vulnerable spot. The Architectural Review, Vol. 2

Book Description

Excerpt from The Architectural Review, Vol. 2: January, 1913 Successful houses, and How T o build them, by Charles E. White, Jr. 5 x 520 pages. 149 photographs. 39 plans. 216 drawings. Price, net. The Macmillan Company, New York, 1912. This book has a particular interest for the home builder or owner, as is indicated by the popular appeal of some of the chapter titles; while its great est value will be ih the large number of hints it contains as to such little considered but im portant details as garbage disposal, fireplace design, heating, electric lighting, etc. In the large number of illustrations, many prove to be of interesting and commendable houses, and many of the drawings are such as would be clear to an untrained reader. In general criti cism, the publishers have made a cumbersome volume by using an unnecessarily thick paper, which indeed does not show up the half-tone illustrations as well as might have been done on a thinner stock; but this does not necessa rily detract from its value to the home builder, and it should prove a popular book.
