Advanced Organic Chemistry

Book Description

The two-part, fifth edition of Advanced Organic Chemistry has been substantially revised and reorganized for greater clarity. The material has been updated to reflect advances in the field since the previous edition, especially in computational chemistry. Part A covers fundamental structural topics and basic mechanistic types. It can stand-alone; together, with Part B: Reaction and Synthesis, the two volumes provide a comprehensive foundation for the study in organic chemistry. Companion websites provide digital models for study of structure, reaction and selectivity for students and exercise solutions for instructors.

Advanced Calculus (Revised Edition)

Book Description

An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis. The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives. In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.

Activity Coefficients in Electrolyte Solutions

Book Description

This book was first published in 1991. It considers the concepts and theories relating to mostly aqueous systems of activity coefficients.

Part B: Reactions and Synthesis

Book Description

Handbook of Aqueous Electrolyte Thermodynamics

Book Description

Expertise in electrolyte systems has become increasingly important in traditional CPI operations, as well as in oil/gas exploration and production. This book is the source for predicting electrolyte systems behavior, an indispensable "do-it-yourself" guide, with a blueprint for formulating predictive mathematical electrolyte models, recommended tabular values to use in these models, and annotated bibliographies. The final chapter is a general recipe for formulating complete predictive models for electrolytes, along with a series of worked illustrative examples. It can serve as a useful research and application tool for the practicing process engineer, and as a textbook for the chemical engineering student.

Home Blood Pressure Monitoring

Book Description

Hypertension remains a leading cause of disability and death worldwide. Self-monitoring of blood pressure by patients at home is currently recommended as a valuable tool for the diagnosis and management of hypertension. Unfortunately, in clinical practice, home blood pressure monitoring is often inadequately implemented, mostly due to the use of inaccurate devices and inappropriate methodologies. Thus, the potential of the method to improve the management of hypertension and cardiovascular disease prevention has not yet been exhausted. This volume presents the available evidence on home blood pressure monitoring, discusses its strengths and limitations, and presents strategies for its optimal implementation in clinical practice. Written by distinguished international experts, it offers a complete source of information and guide for practitioners and researchers dealing with the management of hypertension.

Chemistry of Spices

Book Description

This book (24 chapters) covers the chemistry (chemical composition and structure) of the following spice plants and their products, and provides brief information on the morphology, and postharvest management (storage, packaging and grading) of these crops: black pepper (Piper nigrum), small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), large cardamom (Amomum subulatum), ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and cassia (Cinnamomum spp.), clove, nutmeg and mace, coriander (Coriandrum sativum), cumin (Cuminum cyminum), fennel, fenugreek, paprika and chilli (Capsicum spp.), vanilla (Vanilla spp.), ajowan (Trachyspermum ammi), star anise (Illicium verum), aniseed (Pimpinella anisum), garcinia (Garcinia spp.), tamarind, parsley, celery, curry leaf (Murraya koenigii) and bay leaf (Laurus nobilis). This book will be useful to researchers, industrialists and postgraduate students of agriculture, horticulture and phytochemistry, and to spice traders and processors.

Baking and Pastry

Book Description

First published in 2004, Baking and Pastry has quickly become an essential resource for anyone who wants to create professional-caliber baked goods and desserts. Offering detailed, accessible instructions on basic techniques along with 625 standout recipes, the book covers everything from yeast breads, pastry doughs, quick breads, cookies, custards, souffl?s, icings, and glazes to frozen desserts, pies, cakes, breakfast pastries, savory items, and chocolates and confections. Featuring 461 color photographs and illustrations--more than 60 percent of which are all-new--this revised edition offers new step-by-step methods for core baking techniques that make it even more useful as a basic reference, along with expanded coverage of vegan and kosher baking, petit fours and other mini desserts, plated desserts, decorating principles and techniques, and wedding cakes. Founded in 1946, The Culinary Institute of America is an independent, not-for-profit college offering bachelor's and associate degrees, as well as certificate programs, in culinary arts and baking and pastry arts. A network of more than 37,000 alumni in foodservice and hospitality has helped the CIA earn its reputation as the world's premier culinary college. Visit the CIA online at www.ciachef.edu.
