This textbook is a modern, concise and focused treatment of the mathematical techniques, physical theories and applications of rigid body mechanics, bridging the gap between the geometric and more classical approaches to the topic. It emphasizes the fundamentals of the subject, stresses the importance of notation, integrates the modern geometric view of mechanics and offers a wide variety of examples -- ranging from molecular dynamics to mechanics of robots and planetary rotational dynamics. The author has unified his presentation such that applied mathematicians, mechanical and astro-aerodynamical engineers, physicists, computer scientists and astronomers can all meet the subject on common ground, despite their diverse applications. * Free solutions manual available for lecturers at www.wiley-vch.de/supplements/

The Workshop on Group Theory and Numerical Analysis brought together scientists working in several different but related areas. The unifying theme was the application of group theory and geometrical methods to the solution of differential and difference equations. The emphasis was on the combination of analytical and numerical methods and also the use of symbolic computation. This meeting was organized under the auspices of the Centre de Recherches Mathematiques, Universite de Montreal (Canada). This volume has the character of a monograph and should represent a useful reference book for scientists working in this highly topical field.

Hierarchical matrices are an efficient framework for large-scale fully populated matrices arising, e.g., from the finite element discretization of solution operators of elliptic boundary value problems. In addition to storing such matrices, approximations of the usual matrix operations can be computed with logarithmic-linear complexity, which can be exploited to setup approximate preconditioners in an efficient and convenient way. Besides the algorithmic aspects of hierarchical matrices, the main aim of this book is to present their theoretical background. The book contains the existing approximation theory for elliptic problems including partial differential operators with nonsmooth coefficients. Furthermore, it presents in full detail the adaptive cross approximation method for the efficient treatment of integral operators with non-local kernel functions. The theory is supported by many numerical experiments from real applications.

Computational mechanics is the discipline concerned with the use of computational methods to study phenomena governed by the principles of mechanics. Before the emergence of computational science (also called scientific computing) as a "third way" besides theoretical and experimental sciences, computational mechanics was widely considered to be a sub-discipline of applied mechanics. It is now considered to be a sub-discipline within computational science. This book presents a recent state of the art on the foundations and applications of the meshless natural element method in computational mechanics, including structural mechanics and material forming processes involving solids and Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.

These IMechE conference transactions examine how major improvements have been made in product delivery processes by the effective use of both statistical and analytical methods, as well as examining the problems that can occur as a result of under utilization of information. This volume will be of great interest to managers, engineers, and statisticians at all levels, engaged in project management or the design and development of motor vehicles, their subsystems, and components. CONTENTS INCLUDE Applications of advanced modelling methods in engine development Application of adaptive online DoE techniques for engine ECU calibration Radial basis functions for engine modelling Designing for Six Sigma reliability Dimensional variation analysis for automotive hybrid aluminium body structures Reliability-based multidisciplinary design optimization of vehicle structures
