Book Description
During 1962, the United States Air Force was activating new intercontinental ballistic missile systems (ICBMs) at bases around the United States, adding Atlas F. Titan I and II and Minuteman missiles to the already existing Atlas D and E ICBMs and the Thor, Jupiter, Matador and Mace missiles already on alert around the world. A number of the members of the Association of Air Force Missileers (AAFM) were involved with these missile systems, and many others were serving with BOMARC air defense missiles, Hound Dog air-launched missiles and other missile systems. In October1962, the U.S. discovered that the Soviet Union had placed nuclear armed medium range ballistic missiles in Cuba. The resulting confrontation between these two super powers brought U.S. military forces to the highest alert posture ever attained. This book is an collection of personal stories by AAFM members and other who experience the tension filled period that began at the end of October 1962 and ended when the Soviets agreed to remove the missiles from Cuba.
