Adapt traditional library techniques to the task of indexing, cataloging, and metadata creation for Internet resources! The rapid shift toward digital resources in K-6, higher education, adult education, and other learning communities, has greatly increased the demand on the information professionals to manage this new technology. Metadata and Organizing Educational Resources on the Internet, the first book of its kind, helps clarify the process of cataloging and indexing the vast quantities of data available in digital form, so that users can readily access the information they need. This comprehensive volume documents the experiences of metadata creators (both catalogers and indexers), library administrators, and educators who are actively engaged in projects that organize Internet resources for educational purposes. Metadata and Organizing Educational Resources on the Internet shares the problems the authors encountered in the far-reaching project of creating metadata for a new class of resource, as well as the solutions and options they found. Tackling the salient issues of cataloging and indexing, Metadata and Organizing Educational Resources on the Internet: examines the status quo of cataloging Internet resources explores the relationship between traditional cataloging practices and Internet cataloging introduces a number of educationally focused metadata schemes, including ARIADNE, GEM, and IMS examines theoretical and practice aspects of metadata in relation to today's evolving Internet-based educational terrain discusses specific projects, including ALADIN, PEN-DOR, the Schomburg Research Library, and a catalog of Greek sculpture fragments for the Perseus Project offers charts, figures, screen shots, and Web addresses for initiatives using metadata to facilitate access This is an exciting time to be involved with information services. Metadata and Organizing Educational Resources on the Internet presents the ideas and experiences of the pioneering librarians who are mapping the intricacies of the World Wide Web. A feckless boy is lured by a wicked magician into a trap but the scheme backfires — the boy, Aladdin, is left with a magical lamp and a genie who showers him with riches. Aladdin's wealth makes him an attractive suitor for the sultan's daughter, but when the evil sorcerer returns to kidnap the bride, the young hero must rescue his princess or die trying. This classic retelling of the ever-popular Middle Eastern folktale has entranced readers for over a century. Originally published in 1914 as part of Sindbad the Sailor and Other Stories from The Arabian Nights, this beautiful version by Laurence Housman features eight full-color images by Edmund Dulac, one of the era's most famous illustrators.

A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK “Her technique was simple: aim for the top,” an envious colleague wrote of Clare Boothe Luce. No American woman of the twentieth century aimed so accurately, or rose so far, as this legendary playwright, politician, and social seductress. Born in New York’s Spanish Harlem, with nothing to recommend her but beauty, ferocious intelligence, and dry wit, she transformed herself into the youthful managing editor of Vanity Fair. She married two millionaires and wrote three Broadway hits, including the biting satire, The Women. Her second husband, Henry Luce—the publisher of Time, Fortune, and later at her suggestion Life—was only one of the dozens of men she entranced. Adding politics and power to journalism and drama, Clare used sex, street smarts, acid humor, and money to plot a career more improbable than anything in her own fiction. Not content with mere wealth and the acclaim of transatlantic café society, Clare Boothe Luce confessed to a “rage for fame.” This extraordinary book—the result of more than fifteen years of research by Sylvia Jukes Morris, her chosen biographer—tells how she achieved it. Praise for Rage for Fame “A model biography . . . the sort that only real writers can write.”—Gore Vidal, The New Yorker “[The] riveting first part of a two-volume biography . . . Relentlessly candid, meticulously documented, Morris’s book traces [Clare Boothe] Luce’s rocketing rise from illegitimacy and poverty to wealth, power and fame.”—Hartford Courant “Powerful and resonant, admiring at times, always critical, at times searing, but ultimately fair.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer “Crammed with enough drama for several mini-series.”—The New York Times “An important book about an important figure . . . a stunning feat of biography.”—Forbes “A dishy biography that is also a formidable work of research.”—Slate “One of those rare books where the reader dreads the final page.”—Newport News Daily Press

H.T. MacGilLIVRAY Royal Observatory Blackford Hill Edinburgh EH9 3HJ Scotland U.K. lAU Symposium No. 161 on 'Astronomy from Wide-Field Imaging', held in Potsdam, Germany, during 23-27th August 1993, was the first conference organised by the recently-formed Working Group of lAU Commission 9 on 'Wide-Field Imaging'. This Working Group was instigated during the XXIst meeting of the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Buenos Aires in 1991, and represented a merging of the former formal lAU Working Group on 'Astronomical Photography' and the informal 'Digitised Optical Sky Surveys' Working Group. Dr. Richard West was 'invited' to be Chairperson, and hence was given the daunting task of organising the Group from scratch. The very fact that the first conference after only two years was a major lAU Symposium says much about the determination and enthusiasm of Richard West to fulfilling the aims of the new Working Group. The siting of the conference in Potsdam in formerly East Germany provided an excellent opportunity to advantage from the political changes in Eastern Europe. Good access to the meeting was possible by scientists from Eastern European countries, allowing exchange of information on the very important Wide-Field facilities in both East and West, information on the rich archives of photographic plates that exist in both East and West, and allowing discussions between scientists facing very similar problems in both East and West.
