Designed as a handbook for those engaged in the use and analysis ofpetroleum and natural gas reserves data. A discussion of the mechanics ofreserves estimation and the techniques and definitions underlying the assessment of hydrocarbon reserves is included. The study focuses onAlberta's hydrocarbon reserves estimates generated by the Alberta EnergyResources Conservation Board and the Canadian Petroleum Association sincethe beginning of hydrocarbon exploration in the province. Historical differences between the two estimate series are identified and discussed, with explanations for the differences provided where possible, although noattempt is made to assess the relative accuracy or quality of the series.
