Speak of Me As I Am

Book Description

A moving story of grief, honesty, and the healing power of art — the ties that bind us together, even when those we love are gone. Melanie and Damon are both living in the shadow of loss. For Melanie, it's the loss of her larger-than-life artist mother, taken by cancer well before her time. For Damon, it’s the loss of his best friend, Carlos, who took his own life. As they struggle to fill the empty spaces their loved ones left behind, fate conspires to bring them together. Damon takes pictures with Carlos’s camera to try to understand his choices, and Melanie begins painting as a way of feeling closer to her mother. But when the two join their school’s production of Othello, the play they both hoped would be a distraction becomes a test of who they truly are, both together and on their own. And more than anything else, they discover that it just might be possible to live their lives without completely letting go of their sadness. Praise for Speak of Me As I Am: "Debut author Belasco adeptly captures the tribulations of high school life while also celebrating art's ability to help clarify and contextualize its joys and sorrows. . . . The novel's most intriguing character . . . is grief itself, which the author illuminates, examines, and dissects with a surgeon's precision and the gentle touch of an artist. A stirring account of the trials of adolescence." —Kirkus Reviews "This book will undoubtedly be compared to Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor & Park. . . . Teens seeking a quieter but no less moving story will find this book a perfect read." —Booklist "Never maudlin, always authentic, the portrayal of their struggles to deal with grief and with love will resonate with many teens." —VOYA "A good purchase for realistic fiction collections and for readers looking for books about survivor’s guilt and healing." —School Library Journal "Belasco’s novel sends a powerful message about the complicated nature of grief. . . . Belonging

Book Description

The call for trauma-informed education is growing as the profound impact trauma has for the children’s ability to learn in traditional classrooms is recognized. For children who have experienced abuse and neglect their behavior is often highly reactive, aggressive, withdrawn or unmotivated. They struggle to learn, to make positive relationships or be influenced positively by teachers and school staff. Students become more and more at risk for mental health difficulties. Teachers become more and more frustrated and discouraged as they attempt to teach this vulnerable group of students. Even though it is relationships that have hurt students with developmental trauma, it is known that they must find safe relationships to learn and heal. Forming those relationships with children who have been hurt and no longer trust adults is not easy. This book focuses on three important and comprehensive areas of theory and research that provide a theoretical, clinical, and integrated intervention model for developing the relationships and felt sense of safety children with developmental trauma need. Using what is known from attachment theory, intersubjectivity theory, and interpersonal neurobiology, the reader is helped to understand why children behave in the challenging ways they do. This book offers successes and ongoing challenges as a means to continue the conversation about how best to support some of our most at-risk youth.

The Greatness of being different

Book Description

The Greatness of being different tells the story of Nathan, an autistic boy who was interned from an early age by his parents in a psychiatric hospital because of his condition. Since his stay in the hospital, Nathan understands that he has a gift: he is able to communicate telepathically with anyone in whom he perceives a need or a problem. After leaving the hospital, he is able to reintegrate into society thanks to Joyce, the babysitter of his siblings. Joyce will be able to look beyond appearances and see in Nathan not the guy with the Asperger syndrome but simply a person to feel attracted to, both physically and mentally. When one day Joyce is kidnapped and segregated by a man who wants to do some experiments on her, Nathan can’t avoid her from being abused. This will be his greatest regret, which will prompt him to decide to put his abilities at the service of the police, to allow the capture of dangerous criminals. I.M Cabral is a journalist, psychologist and Autism Specialist. Her life journey and direct contact with the most vulnerable began in Angola, when she met people with different abilities and no support but had no skills or understanding at the time about how to help people who saw the world in a different way. Later in the UK, she began to study about the subject and pursued her studies and working, with the understanding that love is the biggest ingredient to deal with all humans, regardless of any different ability. Within the autism world, she had the chance to meet amazing people whom she always had a great connection with. She also gained the ability to understand certain behaviours or face many of the situations that she witnessed and that could not find a medical or scientific explanation with no judgments, every experience not only helped her become a better human being but also awakened in her a great desire and need to raise awareness about this condition that millions around the world have. The author of The Superpower of Caring for Others shares now on this book her continuing desire of combining her personal and professional skills to enlighten people from every background about the importance of respecting everyone’s differences and to understand that Autism doesn’t mean incapability but a different ability that needs to be respected and accepted. A great believer that empathy is the key to change humanity and that not everything will always have a logical explanation, she is committed to helping the most vulnerable and give them motivation to embrace who and how they are, improving their existing skills, promoting self believe along with raising acceptance worldwide regarding this condition, using different tools and different ways of reaching people according to the environment.
