Later Speeches on Political Questions

Book Description

Excerpt from Later Speeches on Political Questions: With Select Controversial Papers The following speeches deal with questions of current American politics from 1871 to 1889, and they embody, to some extent, the political history of the country during this period. The greater part of them will particularly interest the surviving associates and friends of the men who withdrew from the Republican party in 1872, and thenceforward remained outside of its fold; for they set forth with clearness and force the reasons which prompted them to this memorable revolt against organ ized intolerance and political greed, and made their re turn impossible. Although the party still lives, it has completely outlasted the causes which produced it and made it a necessity, While in the clear mirror of his tory and the light of existing facts it is now seen that the old rallying-cry of reform within the party was a false pretense and a mischievous delusion. Questions National and of National Importance to Every American Citizen

Book Description

Excerpt from Questions National and of National Importance to Every American Citizen: With Reference to Questions Municipal HE object of publishing this little volume is to illustrate to the people, from the stand point of a true American citizen, and not from that of a partisan only, that if true benefits are derived from properly enacted tariff laws, they must be fully supported by properly enacted im migration laws; that, if we have tariff laws, which are a known necessity, we must have, also, just as stringent and just as equally forcible immigra tion laws for true protection. Also, that the money question in connection with those of tariff and immigration, although each performs its part, is not the only great question that so disastrously harms the welfare of our people. But, that in connection with the great principles, as taught by the representatives of the great political parties, there are other questions of equal importance to us as American citizens; and, which will need our attention in turn fully as much as either of the questions named. They are such questions as anarchy and unscrupulously invested capital; not legiti mate capital, but that, which with its most um merciful and unprincipled methods of transacting business, crushes the very life out of the great mass of American people for its own Special ben efit; the one, anarchy, as a result, is the product of the other; and, each is an extreme and setapart from true humanity, performing the Oppo site criminal functions, which have been and will be, until true legislation sets aright such wrongs, the means of perpetrating the greatest criminal acts relating to business and financial matters; and, as well as being a detriment, and a most decided drawback to the advancement and gen eral welfare of a civilized and enlightened Ameri can people. If we establish true laws for the interests of humanity, generally, then we will have founded a true system of government, which is the same as we now have, when we have had enacted such additional laws that will restrict, fully, all im proper acts and abuses, bearing particularly upon the welfare of our people. American Orations

Book Description

Excerpt from American Orations: Studies in American Political History; Edited With Introductions As a teacher of American history, I have found no more luminous texts on our political history than the speeches of the great men who have been able, in their discussions of public questions, to place before us a contem porary record of the history which they them selves were helping to make. To the careful student the secondary authorities can never supply the place of the great productions, the messages and speeches, which historic occasions have called forth. The earnest historical reader will approach these orations, not with the de sign of regarding them merely as specimens of eloquence or as studies in language, but as in dicating the great subjects and occasions of our political history and the spirit and motives of the great leaders Of that history. The orations lead the student to a review of the great strug gles in which the authors were engaged, and to new interest in the science of government from the utterances and permanent productions ofviii prefa CE TO the RE vised edition. News That Matters

Book Description

Almost twenty-five years ago, Shanto Iyengar and Donald R. Kinder first documented a series of sophisticated and innovative experiments that unobtrusively altered the order and emphasis of news stories in selected television broadcasts. Their resulting book News That Matters, now hailed as a classic by scholars of political science and public opinion alike, is here updated for the twenty-first century, with a new preface and epilogue by the authors. Backed by careful analysis of public opinion surveys, the authors show how, despite changing American politics, those issues that receive extended coverage in the national news become more important to viewers, while those that are ignored lose credibility. Moreover, those issues that are prominent in the news stream continue to loom more heavily as criteria for evaluating the president and for choosing between political candidates. “News That Matters does matter, because it demonstrates conclusively that television newscasts powerfully affect opinion. . . . All that follows, whether it supports, modifies, or challenges their conclusions, will have to begin here.”—The Public Interest
