It is located in the central part of the State, on the headwaters of the picturesque Mohawk river, on the watershed between the Hudson river and the Great Lake systems, the summit level of the Erie canal, with splendid railroad transportation, and its industrial advantages are unsurpassed. It is the junction point of the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg railroad, the New York Ontario and Western railroad, and the main line of the New York Central lines, with over one hundred freight trains and forty passenger trains daily. Extensive improvements now under way on the New York Central line will open up several miles of desirable track frontage to manufacturing industries. It is the terminal of the Utica and Mohawk Valley Electric railway, with lines toall towns in the Mohawk Valley for a distance of thirty-five miles east to Little Falls, and electric railway connections covering a greater part of the State. It is the terminal of the Rome and Osceola railroad, now under construction, opening up the rich timber lands to the north. Is on the line of the New York State Barge canal, the Erie canal and Black railway gives good service to all parts, and has approximately a hundred and fifty miles of track within the city limits. There are seven interurban lines into the city, as well as seven railroads, giving direct service through their connections, to 7,800 centers of distribution in fourteen States.
