Anne Unger Greenberg Papers on Gene Kelly


Book Description

The Anne Unger Greenberg Papers on Gene Kelly contains correspondence, programs and newspaper clippings documenting Gene Kelly’s early career as a dance instructor in Pittsburgh in the 1930s, as well as efforts by local groups in the 1970s and 1980s to memorialize Kelly’s connections to Pittsburgh. The correspondence includes short notes and Christmas cards sent from Kelly to Greenberg from the late 1960s to the 1990s. The programs cover recitals at studios in Pittsburgh before Kelly became associated with Beth Shalom, programs from his kermesses at Beth Shalom, and programs from the Gene Kelly Studio of the Dance. A folder documents an effort by the East Liberty Chamber of Commerce in 1986 and 1987 to celebrate Kelly’s connection to the neighborhood, culminating in a reunion of his students and the renaming of a block in his honor. There is also a program from a 1977 production of “The Story of Gene Kelly: A Musical Fantasy” at St. Raphael Elementary School, which Kelly attended as a child.

Federalizing the Muse

The National Endowment for the Arts is often accused of embodying a liberal agenda within the American government. In Federalizing the Muse, Donna Binkiewicz assesses the leadership and goals of Presidents Kennedy through Carter, as well as Congress and the National Council on the Arts, drawing a picture of the major players who created national arts policy. Using presidential papers, NEA and National Archives materials, and numerous interviews with policy makers, Binkiewicz refutes persisting beliefs in arts funding as part of a liberal agenda by arguing that the NEA's origins in the Cold War era colored arts policy with a distinctly moderate undertone. Binkiewicz's study of visual arts grants reveals that NEA officials promoted a modernist, abstract aesthetic specifically because they believed such a style would best showcase American achievement and freedom. This initially led them to neglect many contemporary art forms they feared could be perceived as politically problematic, such as pop, feminist, and ethnic arts. The agency was not able to balance its funding across a variety of art forms before facing serious budget cutbacks. Binkiewicz's analysis brings important historical perspective to the perennial debates about American art policy and sheds light on provocative political and cultural issues in postwar America.

Drawing on exhaustive research in archives, memoirs, interviews, and newspaper coverage, it takes the reader from the original conception of the story in the mind of a German playwright named Ludwig Fulda, through S. N. Behrman’s Broadway production starring Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, to the arduous task of crafting a suitable screenplay at MGM. Behind-the-scenes issues such as Garland’s personal problems during the making of the film and the shaping of the film by Minnelli and Kelly are among the many subjects detailed here. While the initial reception of The Pirate reinforced hopes for its success, many audiences did not understand the film’s tongue-in-cheek aspect, and some critical reviews were mixed. This shaded the perception of the film and its significance. As this careful study shows, The Pirate was a commercial and critical success despite some early misperceptions. The movie made a small profit for MGM, and the film grew in public appeal over time. The Pirate has been studied by film historians, gender studies scholars, and film studies professionals since it was released in 1948.
