An Introduction to Protestant Dogmatics (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from An Introduction to Protestant Dogmatics Has the most rigid bonds of relationship and union with the social and philosophical ideas of his time. The function of the theological semi nary is not to make Christians, but to put the Christian possession of prospective ministers in such form that there will be no barrier between the minister and the educated man of his time. Without such a service on the part of the theo logical school the church' will not only lose ground rapidly, but will gradually degenerate into all manner of schisms and sects, dissipating her energy in religious fads and makeshifts and free-lanceism. Christian Dogmatics (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Christian Dogmatics The need of a comprehensive treatise on Christian doctrine of a scientific character is admitted on all hands. Even the best productions of foreign theologians do not seem altogether suitable as manuals for our theological students. Outlines by British writers of various schools are for the most part too meagre, and in some instances their usefulness is impaired by want of proportion in the treatment of the several doc trines of the system. The attempt has been made in the present work to give a systematic presentation in methodical order of all the leading doctrines of the Christian faith. The standpoint is that of. A moderate Calvinism. The history of dogmas has been introduced only in so far as is necessary for the clear and intelligible statement of the positive doctrine. In like manner, no attempt has been made to develop in detail the biblical element, except in so far as this is needed to supply the foundation for the dogmas accepted and formu lated by the Church. Special attention has been given to the preparation of the lists of literature placed at the head of the several sections. Only such treatises are mentioned as have been found distinctly helpful in the discussion of the particular subject of the section, and references are made to comprehensive and general works on dogmatics only when the treatment in them of the subject dealt with is more or less remarkable for fulness or suggestiveness. Christian Dogmatics and Notes on the History of Dogma (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Christian Dogmatics and Notes on the History of Dogma Space forbids mention of the leading books in general Theology, Dogmatics and History Of Dogma studied during more than half a century Of reading in four languages. In the preparation of this handbook original sources have been used as far as available, but it has not been found desirable to encumber the text with a great mass Of notes and references. The book is not based upon another, but with the exception of terms and quoted definitions it is an attempt at presenting the result Of assimilation and investigation with the Object previously stated. It is my earnest hope that this manual of Christian Dogmatics may serve as a guide for devoted students of Scripture and Of our Lutheran Confessions, and an aid in the faithful exposition of both. Christian Dogmatics, Vol. 12

Book Description

Excerpt from Christian Dogmatics, Vol. 12: A Compendium of the Doctrines of Christianity The work of the learned and pious Dr Martensen, Bishop of Seeland, in Denmark, which is now presented in an English dress, was originally written in Danish, and has gone through several editions. A German translation of it soon appeared, but the Author not being satisfied with that rendering of his work, re-wrote it himself in German, and the present English version is a translation of this later German edition prepared by Dr Martensen himself. The work is what we call a text-book, or manual of Chris tian Dogma; and while here and there the English reader may perceive a degree of abstruseness in the method of treat ing certain doctrines, the Doctrine of the Trinity, for example, - which is only a reflection of the profoundness of the Author's thought, he will find throughout, a clearness and conciseness, not always to be met with in German theo logical works.
