The plan of the work being limited, the subject is treated in a popular manner - rigid scientific arrangement would have been out of place on so small a scale. For the sake of variety and interest, antiquarian notes, historical memoranda, and scraps of biography are freely blended with the text. Much pains have been taken and expense incurred in the production of the Engravings, which, it is believed, will be found of a high character, both architecturally and pictorially.
