The word Comptroller was used until 1857, when it was changed to Controller, for what reason the records do not show, and that form of spelling has continued, as a rule, until the present time. In January, 1854, the salary Of the office was increased to in January, 1862, an assistant having been authorized, it was cut to a year later it was raised to and in December, 1865, to In January, 1872, the salary was fixed at and in January, 1873, it was made at which amount it remained until April, 1902, when it was increased to to commence July 1, 1902. By the Act of June 7, 1883, the appointment of Controller vested in the Common Council upon nomination of the Mayor.
