The Cambridge Handbook of Applied Psychological Ethics is a valuable resource for psychologists and graduate students hoping to further develop their ethical decision making beyond more introductory ethics texts. The book offers real-world ethical vignettes and considerations. Chapters cover a wide range of practice settings, populations, and topics, and are written by scholars in these settings. Chapters focus on the application of ethics to the ethical dilemmas in which mental health and other psychology professionals sometimes find themselves. Each chapter introduces a setting and gives readers a brief understanding of some of the potential ethical issues at hand, before delving deeper into the multiple ethical issues that must be addressed and the ethical principles and standards involved. No other book on the market captures the breadth of ethical issues found in daily practice and focuses entirely on applied ethics in psychology.

"A rich guide for understanding the evolving research landscape in psychology, including changes to core research ethics concepts such as informed consent, privacy, and risk of harm. This handbook offers a thorough and authoritative discussion of the ethical issues in conducting research with human participants. Each chapter poses an important ethical question, considers the relevant factors for addressing the question, and presents guidance for investigators. Topics include: informed consent, deception, risk/benefit ratio, data security, authorship, conflicts of interest, fairness and equity when collaborating with researchers in resource-poor settings, and more. While psychological research with humans still takes place in the investigator's laboratory and field, there is an increasing trend toward multiple investigators and interdisciplinary research projects owing to the complexity of modern research questions. Furthermore, technology has changed dramatically and affects all psychological researchers, whether they are working individually or in large teams. With its comprehensive scope and practical guidance, this book will serve as an invaluable aid to understanding and navigating the ethical challenges that confront new and seasoned researchers alike"--

This two-volume handbook summarizes and makes sense of exciting intellectual developments in the field of community psychology. As a discipline that is considered a half century old in the United States, community psychology has grown in the sophistication and reach of theories and research. Reviewing the chapters of the APA Handbook of Community Psychology, the reader will readily notice several themes emerge. Community psychology's ideas are becoming increasingly elaborated; its theory, research and interventions more situated; and its reach in both thought and action, more expansive. Ideas that may have seemed much simpler when first proposed -- for example, community, prevention and empowerment -- have come to pose challenges, contradictions and opportunities initially unspecified and perhaps unimagined. Under the editorial direction of Meg A. Bond, Irma Serrano-Garca, Christopher B. Keys, and Marybeth Shinn, with chapters authored by both senior and rising scholars, the APA Handbook of Community Psychology provides an indispensable and authoritative reference resource for researchers, instructors, students, practitioners, field leaders and life-long learners alike. This highly anticipated addition to the APA Handbooks in Psychology series covers current knowledge and identifies the most pertinent sources of information in both the core and evolving literature. It highlights community psychology's emphasis on the synergistic relationship between research and action, and offers an international outlook, including chapters integrating perspectives from across cultures and contexts around the world.

Naturally, the chapters vary in the extent to which they incorporate extensive research. For example, some chapters had fewer data to draw upon, whereas others (such as the ones on emotional competence and sexualized treatment relationships) were able to rely heavily on empirical research. Third, our profession has become more sensitive in recent years to issues of fairness and inclusiveness, especially in dealing with groups that historically have been marginalized in American history as well as American psychology. We asked authors to address diversity issues wherever it was appropriate. Consequently, discussions of diversity appear not only in the specific chapter on competence with diverse populations but also in other chapters as varied as research, emotional competence, and supervision. Finally, we wanted authors to offer their views on controversial issues, but we asked them to discuss them in a fair and even-handed manner, rest their conclusions on overarching principles, and acknowledge other reasonable perspectives. At times, authors reached conclusions with which we disagreed; we expect that some readers will as well. Our goal is not to claim a resolution of the issues, but rather to introduce readers to them and to stimulate productive discussions and exchanges of ideas"--Introduction.

We have provided the reader with a resource for applied ethical decision-making for use in clinical, educational, and research settings. The Rehabilitation Psychologist using this book will have a choice of utilizing a Quick Reference guide including pro-con positions regarding possible resolutions and a tabular summary of the varied case examples presented, or making use of more detailed discussion of the ethical concepts pertinent to each case. The most important aspect of this book is inclusion of psycho-social context for each case. This critical factor allows the reader to understand the flow of events and other factors influencing the actions of the key stakeholders, thereby facilitating the ethical decision-making process. The mix of case examples is intentionally broad-based, including ample clinical practice situations, along with challenges found in educational and research settings. There is also variety among the case examples, with two detailed scenarios in each chapter, along with two briefer learning exercises with focused summaries. The reader is challenged to analyze each case and compare the results with the preferred resolution proposed by the authors. Finally, at the end of the book, the reader has access to a list of ethics-relevant reading resources. These resources are divided into categorical domains that will assist with literature searches and further research into applied ethics. The authors trust that this book will serve as a preparatory experience for those psychologists studying for the Rehabilitation Psychology specialty board exam, as well as trainees and clinicians at all levels who desire an applied approach to utilizing the APA Ethics Code as an invaluable guide to everyday professional practice.
